Talbott 2019 Kali Hart Chardonnay, California (Tim)

Nectarine, apple, honeysuckle and vanilla are the flavor notes on this full-bodied, rich and creamy white by Robert Talbott and named for his daughter Kali Hart.  Some of the Kali Hart Chardonnay grapes come from Talbott’s Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, in the northern portion of the Santa Lucia Highlands with a long, cool growing season and gravelly loam soils, making for rich, concentrated flavors; while other grapes come from Olson Vineyard, in the southern portion of Santa Lucia Highlands, with warmer days and granite and limestone soils, contributing soft acidity and richness. A mere 5% of the French oak is new, making for a balanced expression that will pair wonderfully with cream of crab soup or baked chicken with lemon and rosemary.

Center of Effort 2018 “Effort” Pinot Noir, Edna Valley, California (Aron)

The very cool climate and lean soils of the Edna Valley foothills of California set the stage for excellent Pinot Noir making.  “Center of Effort” refers to the intersection of caretaking, skill, commitment and a passion for excellence in the pursuit of making the best wines they can – without deference to expediency. Black raspberry, cola and spice flavor notes give way to more savory elements of bay leaf, thyme and earth. This would be lovely with roast chicken or pork dishes.

Landi “Gavigliano” Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC Superiore, Italy (Andrew)

From the Marche region of Central Italy, this red wine is made from the “Lacrima” grape; lacrima translates to “tear” in Italian, because if the grape is left on the vine beyond optimal ripeness, liquid will weep from the grape. Half of the wine is aged 6 months in small French oak barrels.  Pronounced violet aromatics precede a warm, full-bodied and harmonious palate with notes of forest fruits and spice. Pair this robust dry red with roasted or braised meats.

Avennia 2019 “Gravura” Red, Washington State (Jen & Jerry)

We’ve always been big fans of Avennia, typically having two to three selections from talented winemaker Chris Peterson on the shelves at Mills. AT Roca 2019 Reserva Cava, Classic Penedes, Spain (Pat)

Agustì Torello (AT) Roca founded AT Roca in 2013 with his father and aunt. DO Classic Penedes is a newer, smaller DO that requires organic certification to join. The DO was formed by a small number of growers that wanted to break away from the Cava DO, a DO with no physical boundary known for pumping out large amounts of Sparkling wine that does not reflect the Spanish terroir (75% of production comes from two enormous megawineries).  This more serious Cava rests 15 months on the lees, made in the Champagne method, hand harvested from a single vintage and with zero dosage, a decidedly dry profile. Guilhem Goisot 2020 Aligotè, France (Pat)

While Chardonnay reigns as the chief white wine grape grown in Burgundy, a small amount of Aligotè is also cultivated. Aligotè is also the wine that is mixed with Crème de Cassis to make a classic Kir cocktail. This example, biodynamically farmed by father and son team Guilhem and Jean-Hugues Goisot, is hand-harvested, unoaked and aged on the lees to provide a lovely weight and texture.  Perfect to sip on a hot summer day, this shows lemon custard notes and bright, vivacious acidity.

El Porvenir de Cafayate 2020 Absoluto Torrontes, Cafayate Valley, Argentina (Andres)

This Torrontes is grown at high altitude (5740 ft above sea level) in Salta, Argentina, a region that enjoys huge diurnal temperature shifts, poor soils and almost desert-like climate conditions, ideal for grape growing! Owned and operated by the Romero family since 2000, the estate enjoys the privilege of icon Paul Hobbs as wine consultant. Heady floral aromas of acacia and lilies and a palate awash with orange peel, lemon zest and a zippy dose of acidity, this would be a great alternative for people who enjoy Pinot Grigio or Viognier.

Some of the vines for this 100% Sauvignon Blanc fall outside of the Loire Valley AOC, thus the Vin de France classification on the label. Enjoy as a refreshing aperitif, or with mussels, clams or seafood prepared with a citrus based sauce.

Colline del Sole Falanghina Sannio, Campania, Italy (Aron)

Another great seafood wine, this bright refreshing white is made from 100% Falanghina grown in Falanghina del Sannio, an area in Campania, the “shin” of the boot located just North of Naples. Ancient philosopher Pliny the Elder enjoyed this region and the wines grown here, and in fact his phrase “in vino veritas” (in wine there is truth) is thought to be inspired by the region. This dry wine shows notes of orange peel and a hint of spice, and Campanians pair it with the abundant seafood or local specialty buffalo mozzarella pizza.

Raventos i Blanc 2018 De la Finca, Conca del Riu Anoia, Spain (Aron)

Skyrocketing Champagne prices have us searching for options in high quality sparkling wine. A visit from Pepe Raventos, fourteenth (not a misprint) generation winemaker from Raventos I Blanc in the Penedes provided just the solution. We thoroughly enjoyed his entry level offerings but were downright enthralled by this wine: De la Finca, a gorgeous Sparkling from vines planted in 1964 to a vineyard with highly fossilized marine soils. Aged for 30 months with the lees, it shows bold, yeasty notes with tiny fine bubbles and Mediterranean notes of fennel, underbrush and saline. Serve as aperitif for a very special occasion, or paired with a variety of appetizers, from oysters to Albòndigas (Spanish pork and chorizo meatballs). Certified organic, and the vineyards are certified Biodynamic although the wine is not officially certified Biodynamic. Salud!

Menicucci Ginesia 2021 Pecorino, Abruzzo, Italy (Pat)

“Pecora” translates to “sheep” in Italian, the prominence of which explains the much more well-known Pecorino cheese. However, Pecorino is also a beautiful white wine of the Abruzzo region of Italy, made from a small, pale grape of low yielding and annoyingly fickle vines; it requires a patient and dedicated farmer! Dry with notes of pear and almond, it’s nicely structured and wonderful to pair with seafood, mushroom risotto, or roasted turkey or chicken.

Seehof “Elektrisch” Riesling, Rheinhessen, Germany (Andrew)

With the Thanksgiving table on the horizon, a dry or semi-dry Riesling is an excellent match for fried or smoked turkey, as well as matching difficult sides like sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.  This Kabinett Riesling is at once delicate, mineral, a little less sweet, and more acid-driven than your typical Kabinett, explaining the “Elektrisch” moniker.  Think Granny Smith apple, bright citrus and a number two pencil to boot. Spicy food, shellfish, and those turkey day staples are embraced by this modern German white wine.

Chrysalis 2021 Albariño, Virginia (Andres)

This delightful white wine is made from 100% Albariño, a grape typically grown in Spain which also thrives in Virginia!.  Fermentation in stainless steel ensures a clean, crisp profile, while aging 6 months in French oak adds richness and mouthfeel.  Citrus, almond, apricot and peach notes and plenty of acidity make this a great match for fish served with a bold citrus-cased sauce or roasted lemon chicken.

Chateau de la Greffiere “Sous le Bois” Macon La Roche Vineuse, Burgundy, France (Tim)

An old friend gets a new label on this most recent vintage update from Greffiere. This fresh expression of Chardonnay from Burgundy is named “Sous le Bois”, which means “under the wood”, describing the vineyard location below a piney forest. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, apple, peach and subtle brioche in this unoaked Chardonnay will compliment, not cover up crab cakes and simple seafood preparations sauteed in butter.

One of the five main varietals grown in the gravelly soiled Jura region nestled between Burgundy and Switzerland, Pinot Noir is often blended into reds but in this case stands on its own. After fermentation the wine sees 8 months in oak, 20% new. Notes of cherries, wild berries, and earthy mushroom are presented in a velvety textured package…this will nicely accompany a cheese platter, coq au vin or beef bourguinon.

Cline 2019 Petite Sirah, Contra Costa County, California (Andres)

Cline Family Cellars started in Oakley California in 1982 before relocating in 1991 to their current family ranch in Carneros in the Sonoma heartland.  They championed Rhone varietals, establishing themselves as one of California’s original “Rhone Rangers”, but also grow Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and this Petite Sirah. This full-bodied red delights the palate with ripe blackberry, coffee, mocha and baking spice notes and at this price is a super value! Domaine Faillenc Sainte Marie 2020 Corbieres, France (Andrew)

Faillenc Sainte Marie is a tiny property of 8 hectares, perched precariously on the rocky foothills of Mont Alaric, where it’s exposed to harsh weather conditions.  Dominique and Marie Therese Gilbert have handed over the Domaine to son Jean-Baptiste Gilbert, who is expanding production and transitioning to completely organic production.  Dominique, still a practicing architect, designs the attractive labels for the wines while Marie Therese carefully tends the low-yielding vines in the field.  This example of their work is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, cofermented before sitting in tank (no oak) prior to bottling.  Sporting wild berry notes, good acidity and rustic tannins, this will pair wonderfully with a hearty beef stew, chili, or the traditional Languedoc meal of Cassoulet.

Penley Estate 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon “Tolmer” Coonawara, Australia (Pat)

Coonawara is a region in Southwest Australia, known for a very unique terra rossa soil layered over limestone, formed by the weathering of limestone over the passage of thousands of years. The soil and climate are perfect for growing Bordeaux varietals. We’ve long enjoyed wines from Penley Estate, and when we could no longer buy their “Phoenix” Cabernet, we looked to this, their “Tolmer” Cabernet Sauvignon.  Showing intense blueberry, blackcurrant and mineral notes, this is a deep, smooth, ripe Cabernet to enjoy with a well marbled grilled steak. Let this open by decanting or even allowing to sit in the glass for 15-20 minutes.

Vicentin 2021 Blanc de Malbec, Valle de Uco, Argentina (Andres)

An unusual find, this white wine made from the Malbec grape hails from the Valle de Uco of Argentina, a relatively cool-climate region that allows for slow ripening of grapes, with vines grown in well-draining clay rock soils with a stony sand surface.  Recent investment by Bordeaux greats Lurton and Rothschild highlight the capability of the area!  Six months in new American oak provides weight and texture to this perfect winter white; the wine shows fresh peach and raspberry fruit notes backed by a delicate toastiness and creamy texture. Pair with a hot bowl of cream of crab soup, fettucini alfredo or fugazza, Buenos Aires’ cheese-rich version of pizza.
