Perrin 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc, France (Andrew)
A classic Rhone producer, the Perrin family is responsible for such iconic wines as Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and Miraval Rosè, but a careful look under the hood will reveal their many affordable and tasty wines, like this white blend made from Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. It features citrus and peach notes with a generous dose of stony minerality. Try with saffron chicken, baked rockfish or bouillabaisse, the classic fish stew of Provence.

Denis Meunier 2017 Vouvray Sec “Expresion de Silex”, Loire Valley, France (Geoffrey)
Chenin Blanc is the grape in this organically farmed dry white wine from Denis Meunier, who took over 13 hectares of vineyards from his father and uncle in 2012. The fossilized marine base and limestone and flint (thus “silex”) soil is evident in the pronounced minerality of the wine, which also features bright citrus aromatics and lively acidity on the palate. I’ll try this with a roasted chicken or stuffed pork chops.

Bodegas Morca Godina 2015 Garnacha, Campo de Borja, Spain (Jen & Jerry)
Bodegas Morca is situated in the village of Borja in the Spanish province of Zaragoza (southeast of the more familiar Rioja). This is not a delicate wine but a bold, full-bodied Garnacha aged 15 months in French oak, rich with berry fruit notes and spice. Soft velvety tannins make it an enjoyable glass on its own but it will also pair wonderfully with roasted pork tenderloin, Swedish meatballs or pasta with spicy sausage and sundried tomatoes.

Jalits 2016 Eisenberg Blaufrankisch, Austria (Tim)
Mathias Jalits is an up and coming winemaker in the Eisenberg appellation of South Austria. Eisenberg is composed of green slate soils with iron deposits, which explains the powerful wines with a strong undercurrent of minerality. Blaufrankisch is one of Austria’s premier indigenous grapes, and can range from fun and fruity to powerful, complex styles. This version spends a year in used barriques and boasts blackberry and cherry fruits and a firm tannic structure, making it ideal to match with roasted meats, mushrooms and wild game dishes. Rated 91pts by Wine Enthusiast.

Bulgariana 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bulgaria (Aron)
Enjoy this inexpensive but delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Bulgaria, a country about the size of New York State that was once the 4thlargest producer of wine in the world, 90% of which was supplied to the Soviet Union. Now, the country is focused on smaller yields and higher quality production. Thracian Valley, which has roughly 75% of the country’s vineyards, is south of the Balkan Mountains and enjoys a moderate climate from the influence of the Black Sea to the east. This wine offers up black plum, blackberry and a touch of spice. Rated 90pts Wine Enthusiast and “Best Buy” designation. Try with cheeseburgers, meatloaf, or Bulgarian beef stew.

Trentadue Chocolate Amore Port, Alexander Valley, California (Andres)
What could be more romantic than a wine called amore? Made from Merlot grapes grown on Trentadue’s Geyserville Ranch, netural grape spirits are added to stop fermentation (similar to traditional port wine production), then chocolate extract is added. This rich, chocolate port can be poured over ice cream or enjoyed as a glass of dessert on its own.

Sadly, he passed away in 2010 but the family continues to make great wine! Pick up a bottle of this delicious Chardonnay, which brings flavors of ripe apple, butter, citrus, and light toasty oak from 7 months in French and Hungarian oak aging. La Braccesca 2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Italy (Tim)
Try this Sangiovese from the vineyards of Montepulciano, which surround the city of Siena in Tuscany. The Sangiovese grapes age in large oak casks for 12 months, followed by an additional 12 months in bottle. Owned by the famous Antinori family, the 1270 acre La Braccesca estate was once held by the Bracci counts, who gave their name and their coat of arms (the gold armored sword wielding arm pictured on the label) to the estate. Pretty cherry and strawberry fruit notes show a counterpoint to the vanilla and violet nuances. Enjoy with roasted lamb, mushroom risotto, or a Tuscan specialty such as Bistecca all Fiorentina (made in Tuscany from the famed white Chianina cattle). Rated 91pts Wine Enthusiast.

Tetramythos Retsina, Greece (Andrew)
Most wine lovers recoil with fear at the mention of “Retsina”, but this version is a lovely exception. Retsina has a 2000 year history in Greece, where Greeks used pine resin to prevent oxidation and preserve their wine in their amphora before glass bottles were invented, resulting in an often distasteful piney aroma and flavor in the wine. This organic Retsina shows restraint with the pine resin, instead displaying pear, beeswax and honey fruit and a tangy, dry finish. Try with salads or light seafood preparations.

Jean Louis Denois Classique Brut, Limoux, France (Pat D.)
Jean-Louis Denois is widely considered to be a rising star in the Languedoc region of France. Growing up the sixth generation of a Champagne making family, he decided to go his own way, planting his first grapes in 1991. Even though his vineyards are in the Limoux appellation, his refusal to use the required Mauzac grape means he cannot use Limoux on the label. Instead, this is composed of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, organically grown and aged on lees for three years on racks. The result? A lovely, toasty, yeasty number that’s more reminiscent of a fine Champagne than a Cremànt of Southern France. Pass the caviar!

Forlorn Hope Queen of the Sierra 2016 Red, Santa Barbara, California (Geoffrey)
A visit from Forlorn Hope winemaker Matthew Rorick revealed several wines we found to be very interesting and well-made, including this blend comprised largely of the Trousseau grape grown at high elevations in the Sierra Foothills. Limestone and schist soils provide pronounced aromatics, lovely texture and bright acidity. Notes of cherry and plum are very pleasing in this harmonious red that will leave you not at all forlorn.
