Ridgeback is a family owned wine farm located just outside Paarl near Cape Town, South Africa, and this white, sweet, fruity dessert wine is just one of their productions we tried and enjoyed. From the winemaker, “A hedonistic spectrum of ruby grapefruit, orange blossoms, honey, glace pineapple and white peach supported by a seamless line of lime zest acidity.” The origin of the Ridgeback brand derives from the Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs (indigenous to Southern Africa) which are kept on the farm. In earlier days, these dogs were typically used for lion hunting, and embody the strength and quality of the farms wines.

2013 Left Coast Cellars White Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Jen and Jerry)
Try this unique stainless steel fermented Pinot Noir (fermented without skins) that we sampled recently. This wine brims with Rainier cherry, white peach, poached pear and honey flavors and bright, balanced acidity and a lingering mineral finish. Although this vintage is not yet rated, the 2012 earned 90pts Wine Enthusiast. 2013 Inti Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina (Tim)
Try this delightful new addition to our $10 Wine Racks. Bonarda was originally cultivated in the Piedmont region of Italy and then transported to Argentina where it is now widely grown. Disease wiped out production of this grape in Italy. Bonarda is an easy-drinking wine, slightly lighter bodied than Malbec but lusciously fruit forward- people enjoy the cherry and plum flavors and the light tannins and moderate acidity. Try with roast chicken or pork.

2012 Canoe Ridge “Expedition” Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington State (Jen & Jerry)
This Cabernet Sauvignon was actually recommended to us by a Mills Club Member, although we’ve long been a fan of the winery and have enjoyed the Expedition Pinot Gris many times. Canoe Ridge’s estate vineyard is located along a wide swath of the Columbia River in eastern Washington-the river moderates the temperature fluctuations of the vineyard. This blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 6% Merlot and 5% Malbec delivers aromas of forest floor and wild strawberries and layered juicy flavors of smoky plum and savory black cherry with a deep, velvety finish.
