2014 St. Urbans-Hof Urban Riesling Qba, Mosel, Germany (Ingrid)

We enjoyed meeting winemaker Nik Weis and tasting through his excellent wines a few weeks ago-this Urban Riesling stood out as a tremendous value. Characterized by a complex, smoky and floral nose and a juicy, fruity elegant mouthfeel, this Riesling finishes off dry and crisp. Excellent with cheese, shellfish, spicy Thai food, or salty dishes such as ham or pork.

2013 Bonterra Chardonnay (Mike)

2012 Purcari 1827 Rara Negra, Moldova (Mike)

100% indigenous varietal Rara Neagra goes into this full bodied, velvety red with notes of dried fruit and vanilla and a wonderfully long finish. This drinks like a very well-made Pinot Noir.

Concha y Toro 2012 Casillero del Diablo Carmenere, Chile (Tim)

Aromas of dark plum, chocolate, and hints of coffee and toasty oak on the nose with dark plum and spice on the palate characterize this dry red wine from Chile. Vina Concha y Toro was founded in 1883, and is one of Latin America’s leading producers. Their top of the range wines Don Melchor and Almaviva frequently land on top 100 lists of Wine Spectator and earn very high marks from major rating authorities.

Bodegas Volver 2012 Tarima Monastrell Organic, Alicante, Spain (Tim)

A new organic selection for Mills, rated 90pts Robert Parker, “abundant blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with a hint of crushed chalk. Medium to full bodied with amazing concentration, this big, savory, mouthfilling wine should drink nicely for 5-6 years.” Pair this bargain wine with grilled meats or stew. This would be a great wine to serve for a crowd with the Cuban dish “Ropa Vieja”, a stewed, shredded beef dish served over rice or on tortillas.

NV Bailly Lapierre Brut Cremant de Borgogne (Jen & Jerry)

Cremants are simply French sparkling wines made in areas outside of the Champagne region- they are made using the same method as Champagne, and sometimes with different varietals. This is a delicious, complex sparkling wine from the village of Bailly in Burgundy, France made from the Pinot Noir grape. At just a fraction of the price of Champagne, this presents an excellent value! Delicate, long-lasting bubbles and a fine streak of minerality characterize this wine. The pleasant acidity makes it pair perfectly with cheese, fried foods or dishes with creamy sauces.

Santola Vinho Verde, Portugal (Jeremy)

This is made in the Vinho Verde region of Portugal from Loureiro and Pederna grapes in mostly granite soil. The result is super refreshing, crisp wine with low alcohol and a slight effervescence. 100% Viognier farmed organically in chalky clay soil by Marc and Mireille Besnardeau. The yields are very low, making this wine very concentrated and packed with character. This is a sophisticated, floral wine with fantastic minerality and depth. Delicious with cheese, fish, chicken or pork!

2014 Domaine Bellevue Touraine Rose, Loire Valley, France (Ryan)

A delicious, dry rose chock full of raspberry and cherry flavors from a family owned estate in the Loire Valley. Made from Cab Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Noir, Gamay and Cot, this a great pairing with spicy foods. The Washington Post recently rated this “excellent”.

2012 La Mozza I Perazzi Morellino de Scansano, Italy (Jen & Jerry)

This is a blend of Morellino (the name for Sangiovese in Maremma), 5% syrah, 5% Alicante, 3% Cillegiolo and 2% Colorino. Juicy dark fruit mingles with spice and licorice on the palate. Drink with pizza or tomato based pasta dishes!

2011 Mas Martinet Bru Priorat, Catalunya, Spain (Pat)

Winemaker Sara Parez sources biodynamically farmed grapes for this wine from a single hillside vineyard facing Montsant-fermented in oak vats and aged in French oak for 17months, this wine is non-filtered. The blend is 60% Garnacha (Black and Hairy), 25% Syrah, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, making for a big, bold, delicious, yet balanced “wow” wine.   One of the top producers in Spain, this is imported by the highly selective Weygandt-Metzler. Pair with grilled meats.

Don’t automatically default to Pinot Grigio when you are craving an Italian white wine! Italy cultivates hundreds of varietals, and the most widely planted white wine grape in Italy is actually Catarratto! Gorgeous aromas of fresh citrus and white peach emanate from this dry white from high atop the seaside Mandoni Mountains in the northern part of Sicily. This juicy, dry white shows apricot, peach, and citrus flavors and spicy beeswax aromas…a refreshing Mediterranean breeze in a glass!

Alexandre Monmousseau’s 2013 Clos Le Vigneau Vouvray, Loire Valley, France (Carolyn)

We love this superstar Chenin Blanc from Vouvray which earned 92pts and “Editor’s Choice” award from Wine Enthusiast magazine last month, “This Vouvray reveals classic nutty, flowery, honeyed aromatics with hints of spring flowers, poached pears, buttered citrus and apricot marmalade notes.” This dryer style Vouvray is absolutely divine with white fish, lobster and shrimp.

Duca Carlo Guarini’s Old Vines Primitivo has been a Mills’ favorite for years, and therefore we were excited to sample their Negroamaro- we were not disappointed! Intense yet pretty bright red berry fruit characterize this well-balanced wine with a velvety soft finish. Negroamaro is a widely planted varietal in Salento, producing wines that vary widely in style. This bold red version would pair wonderfully with sausage dishes and tomato based sauces.

2012 Comtes von Neipperg Seigneurs d’Alguilhe, Cotes de Castillon, Bordeaux, France (Pat)

Stephan von Neipperg purchased Chateau d’Aiguilhe in 1989, replanted many vines and brought the facility up to modern stsndards- he also owns St. Emilion properties La Mondotte and Clos de l’Oratoire. This Bordeaux is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, a fruit forward, medium bodied with cherry, thyme, espresso notes with a touch of spice and earthiness- a seriously good value! Try with roasted chicken or cheeseburgers!
