An excellent value alternative to French Champagne!  Made from a blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada and planted in clay/limestone soils, this sparkling earned 90pts from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, “Lemon/lime, crushed rock and white currant notes are present in this crisp, elegant, refreshing, zesty dry sparkler.  Hints of wheat thins and brioche add complexity.  Enjoy this medium bodied offering over the next 1-2 years.”

2012 Domaine Laurent Martray Combiaty Brouilly VV, Beaujolais, France (Mike)

100% Gamay; medium bodied and brimming with bright red berry notes and spiciness, this is a forward and easy drinking wine that has great character and complexity! Laurent Martray is a young, talented winemaker who owns a vineyard in the tiny hamlet of Combiaty in the heart of the Brouilly region of Beaujolais. The unique terroir or granite and volcanic blue stone gives great character and structure. The grapes are from 40 year old vines “VV” and aging takes place in large oak foudres with no filtration.

2010 Alain Jaume Lirac Roquedon, Rhone, France (Pat)

A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 10% Carignan, this wine displays an inky color, a nose of blackcurrant and blackberry fruit and spices. On the palate, a solid direct beam of dark licorice, plum sauce and fruitcake with ample toast on the juicy fleshy finish. A delicious and rewarding red!

2011 Chateau Tanunda Grand Barossa Shiraz, Australia (Tim)

A perfect big red to match with grilled foods, this Shiraz earned 89 points Robert Parker, “Lovely and intense ripe black fruit and blueberry preserves on the nose with hints of violets, chocolate, pepper and vanilla. Medium to full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it has a good backbone of medium level rounded tannins and lively acidity, finishing long.

2009 Chateau Tour D’Auron, Bordeaux, France (Matt)

From the Milhade family (third generation Bordeaux landowners), this wine is sourced from the Chateau Tour d’Auron vineyard just 3 miles from Pomerol. The plantings are primarily Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This wine exhibits a nose of truffles, violets, and rich fruits.  The palate is medium to full bodied with  good structure that frames the black cherry and blueberry fruits. Well balanced, elegant, complex and long; a great Bordeaux value!

Ribolla Gialla is a naturally thick, dense varietal from this NorthEastern region of Friuli. Enjoy tiny bubbles and aromas of stone fruit, melon, honey and a creamy butteriness on the finish. The Colutta farm “Bandut” is named after an ancient piece of land bought by Antonio Colutta in the early 1900s and now belongs to Giorgio Colutta. Pair with crab cakes or fried calamari.

I really enjoy and often recommend this very rich yet accessible Californai Chardonnay- a great value which earned 91pts from Wine & Spirits, “This shows a lot of oak at first in its scents of toast and coffee, but there’s a pleasant glow to the fruit underneath.  It feels at once burnished and bright, with creamy richness turning toward lifted aromas of chamomile flowers as it absorbs air. It’s a polished chardonnay for crab.”

Ridgeback is a family owned wine farm located just outside Paarl near Cape Town, South Africa, and this white, sweet, fruity dessert wine is just one of their productions we tried and enjoyed.  From the winemaker, “A hedonistic spectrum of ruby grapefruit, orange blossoms, honey, glace pineapple and white peach supported by a seamless line of lime zest acidity.” The origin of the Ridgeback brand derives from the Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs (indigenous to Southern Africa) which are kept on the farm. In earlier days, these dogs were typically used for lion hunting, and embody the strength and quality of the farms wines.
