2009 Alpha Estate Hedgehog Vineyard Xinomavro Red, Amyndeon, Greece
$19.99
(90 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)
Alpha Estate makes some of our favorite Greek red wines, especially this one from Xinomavro, which is considered the noblest of Greek’s red wine grapes with big tannins similar to Nebbiolo-based Italian reds. Even better, this wine is made Xinomavro grapes from a small single vineyard plot at Alpha Estate called “Hedgehog” in the northern Macedonia area of Greece, from where the best Xinomavro reds come. This big red wine pairs best with grilled and roasted meats. Robert Parker’s review:
“The 2009 Xinomavro Hedgehog Vineyard is from a high-altitude site (690 meters), aged in French oak for 12 months and held back for another 12 months in bottle before release…. I was not quite expecting the power – it actually seems more intense than the 2008. Earthy, bright and gripping, with both acidity and tannin on the finish, this has a charmingly rustic feel to it at a very fine price point. Like many of Alpha’s wines, it will need a food matchup. It isn’t a sweet, sip-on-its-own type of wine. But there is a lot of STUFF going on here for this rather modest price range. I loved its earthy complexity. Drink 2014-2022. (2/ 2013)”

Here is Slack Winery’s story about this wine’s name:
“How did we get the name Rocky Shoals? ….Just south of Woodlawn Farm [location of Slack Winery’s tasting room and bed and breakfast] is Point Lookout, a promontory of land-meets-sea known for its rocky shoals. Twenty-five years ago, our friend Giles Gerard sailed a daring personal mission in his wooden craft boat, Mon Coquin, arriving safely in America from Paris before crashing unexpectedly on the rocky shoals at Point Lookout. This sparkling red honors the courage of Frenchmen like Giles who sail independently and fearlessly to a new land, then serve as selfless ambassadors to teach the rest of the world about terroir, fois gras, specialty herbs and red wines. Rocky Shoals also pays tribute to the extraordinary wine maker Eric Fry, who taught us to make red wines in the classic Bordeaux style, yet encouraged our unbridled experimentation elsewhere.”
