RdV 2013 “Friends and Family” Red Blend, Delaplane, Virginia (Carolyn)
We felt incredibly fortunate to be able to snag a case of wine from this exceptional Virginia winery. Rutger de Vink (“Vink” translates to “finch”, thus the watercolor birds on the label, 1 looking back to the past and 2 looking forward to the future) established the winery in 2004 and has managed to steadily increase his cult following ever since. This delicious and affordable red blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 6% Petite Verdot is an example of a Bordeaux type blend using meticulous winemaking practices in the Virginia terroir.

Menhir Salento 2014 “Pietra”, Puglia, Italy (Pat D.)
Boutique producer Menhir Salento is owned and operated by two brothers in Puglia who utilize organic vineyard practices. With 60% Primitivo and 40% Susumaniello, this bold wine will work great with smoked cured meats, tomato sauces, and hard cheeses. With a nose of currant and cinnamon, this is a warm, big-bodied red. Primitivo is a close relative to our California Zinfandel, and “Susumaniello” is a grape whose name literally translates to “donkey load”, referring to the amount of grapes the vine produces early in life.

We really enjoy this new Prosecco, made in the Charmat method from the Glera grape. Made by two brothers (Luigi and Michele Gasparetto) based in Treviso, this is entirely estate grown and produced! A beautiful nose and even though it is “extra dry” we thought it was closer to a Brut, also, as a Frizzante, it has fewer bubbles than a regular Prosecco.. To open, remove the rope on top and open with a regular wine bottle opener. Try with salads, cheeses or as a lovely aperitif!
