If you love Napa Chardonnay, this is a must-attend event. We tasted the new vintage of Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay at Mills in mid-March and it was outstanding. You’ll be able to taste the highly rated 2010 vintage, as well as the new 2011 vintage and the more budget friendly red label. Excellent wines, perfect for the Spring Holiday entertaining season.

The Maillart family can trace their vine growing roots to 1753. They farm organically and use photovoltaic energy panels to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. This blend of 60% Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay earned 91 points Wine Spectator. We tasted this last month and loved the toasty, baked apple, bread dough nose and flavors.

This wine is an excellent recent addition to our $10 wine rack, a super value that earned 90 pts from Steven Tanzer of International Wine Cellar, “Bright ruby-red. Fragrant aromas of cherry, pipe tobacco and vanilla, with a smoky overtone. Smoky and sweet on the palate, offering broad dark fruit flavors and a touch of coconut. Finishes juicy and long, with sneaky tannins and lingering sweetness.”

2012 Malojer Gummerhof Lagrein Gries, Alto Adige, Italy (Pat)
The Lagrein (rhymes with “wine”) grape is grown almost exclusively in the northernmost Alto Adige region of Italy, and is more Austrian than Italian in influence-the terroir is mountain/ alpine microclimate and this region was part of Austria prior to WWI. We were impressed by the bright cherry flavor and linear nature of this delicious wine-pair it with smoked or cured ham, beef or game stews, polenta, mushrooms or root vegetables- it also elevates pork-try with chops, tenderloin or shoulder.
