NV Nicolas Maillart “Marie Hanze” Champagne, France (Jen & Jerry)
The Maillart family can trace their vine growing roots to 1753. They farm organically and use photovoltaic energy panels to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. This blend of 60% Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay earned 91 points Wine Spectator. We tasted this last month and loved the toasty, baked apple, bread dough nose and flavors.

2010 Burgo Viejo Rioja, Spain (Tim)
This wine is an excellent recent addition to our $10 wine rack, a super value that earned 90 pts from Steven Tanzer of International Wine Cellar, “Bright ruby-red. Fragrant aromas of cherry, pipe tobacco and vanilla, with a smoky overtone. Smoky and sweet on the palate, offering broad dark fruit flavors and a touch of coconut. Finishes juicy and long, with sneaky tannins and lingering sweetness.”

2012 Malojer Gummerhof Lagrein Gries, Alto Adige, Italy (Pat)
The Lagrein (rhymes with “wine”) grape is grown almost exclusively in the northernmost Alto Adige region of Italy, and is more Austrian than Italian in influence-the terroir is mountain/ alpine microclimate and this region was part of Austria prior to WWI. We were impressed by the bright cherry flavor and linear nature of this delicious wine-pair it with smoked or cured ham, beef or game stews, polenta, mushrooms or root vegetables- it also elevates pork-try with chops, tenderloin or shoulder.

2012 Corvidae “Ravenna” Riesling, Yakima Valley, Washington (Ingrid)
Stone fruits, gingersnap and honey show through on this beautifully balanced wine which was fermented in stainless steel. Brightly aromatic, 2.5% residual sugar gives this wine beautiful texture and a crisp finish. The label is a linocut that depicts St. Benedict’s Raven. According to legend, a raven would bring the 6th Century monk food during his time as a hermit in the mountains near Subiaco, Italy.

2011 Clos du Serres Terrasses du Larzac “La Blaca”, Languedoc, France (Mike)
A very well made blend of 75% Syrah, 15% Grenache, and 10% Carignan from a tiny appellation in Coteaux de Languedoc. Earned 92 pts Robert Parker, “Fabulous notes of blueberry, violets, spice box and liquid flowers. Medium to full bodied and exceedingly silky and pure on the palate, it has a knockout texture, fine tannin, and a terrific finish. Drink 2014-2021. “La Blaca” means “White Oak.”

Malvasia di Casorzo Dolce, Piedmont, Italy (Ingrid)
