Albert Bichot Crèmant de Bourgogne, France (Pat)

The Bichot family settled in Burgundy in 1350, the doe (biche) on the label representing as the family’s symbol ever since. Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Champagne Method, this sparkling wine from Burgundy impressed us with bright lime and pink grapefruit notes and rich toasty, yeasty flavors and aromas reminiscent of high quality Champagne! Celebrate a special occasion with this aperitif or pair with shrimp, raw oysters or sushi.

Domaine Collotte 2019 Marsannay Blanc, Burgundy, France (Tim)

Phillipe Collotte and his daughter Isabelle are known for their excellent Marsannay Blanc; they produce very low yields, use no chemical pesticides or herbicides and bottle their wines unfiltered. This example of their Chardonnay from the Cote de Nuits comes from 30-40 year old vines planted to stoney (“Blungey”) and clay soils. Half of the wine is aged in stainless steel and the other half in mostly used oak for 13 months, making for a supremely elegant and balanced expression of the grape. Showing elements of peach, slate and smoke, this can be enjoyed with lobster or crab dishes.

Alain de la Treille Vouvray, Loire Valley, France (Aron)

We recently brought in the Alain de la Treille Pinot Noir and then recently were impressed with the value of this Chenin Blanc from Vouvray in the Loire Valley. This just-off-dry white shows ample notes of honey, apricots and pears with good palate-cleansing acidity. Enjoy with pulled pork sandwiches, spicy Thai dishes, or a soft cheese such as Brie.

Tres Ojos 2019 Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain (Aron)

We recently retasted this perennial Mills’ favorite and were blown away by the value it still represents! Named for an ancient bridge in Calatayud that sports arches resembling “tres ojos”, or “three eyes”, the winery uses no oak in this medium-bodied, deeply concentrated red, with notes of red raspberries, spice and white pepper. Not overly tannic, this can be enjoyed on its own, or paired with tapas or some good quality Manchego cheese and salted Marcona almonds.

Hisotelaray 2020 Filari di Sant’Antoni, Salento, Italy (Andres)

This harmonious red with a tumultuous past from the Puglia region of Italy is made from 100% Negroamaro, a grape indigenous to Salento. Showing cherry fruit notes with good acidity and firm tannins, it’s an ideal wine to serve with pizza topped with pepperoni or spicy sausages.  The vineyards in this particular part of Salento were seized from organized crime groups which had destroyed them decades ago, thus the “Liberaterra”, or “freed land” under the winery name on the label.
