Vinoterra 2014 Mtsvane, Republic of Georgia (Andres)

The Republic of Georgia is widely considered to have one of the earliest winemaking cultures.  Shards of primitive winemaking vessels have been unearthed from 8000 years ago. Vinoterra is a wine brand under the Shuchmann winery, all of the wines utilizing Qvevri, large clay jars buried underground for fermentation, maceration and aging.   Vinoterra white wines are orange wines as they see nearly six months of skin, seed, and stem contact during the fermentation process.  The grape in this wine is Mtsvane, an indigenous Georgian grape. Expect a generous mouthfeel of spicy golden fruit followed by some saline, herbal notes like capers. A completely natural wine, this uses only wild/airborne yeasts and is unfiltered.

Aranjuez “Duo”, Tarija, Bolivia (Tim)

A blend of Tannat and Merlot, this delicious intense red is grown in the Central Valley of Tarija near the Southern border of Bolivia. The high altitude of the valley makes it possible to grow grapes at this latitude, where wines have been made for 400 years. Tannat was originally grown in Southwest France before becoming the most prominently grown grape in Uruguay. Aranjuez’s impressive line of wines including Tannat and this Tannat Merlot blend have won awards in Uruguay blind tastings.

Yangarra 2016 Shiraz “PF”, McLaren Vale, South Australia (Jess)

“PF” stands for “preservative free”, referring to the lack of added sulfur or fining in the winemaking process, using grapes grown biodynamically without the use of fungicides, herbicides or synthetic chemicals. Featuring notes of ripe dark fruits, fresh leather and tar, this full-bodied Shiraz would pair nicely with grilled steaks. Rated 94pts by James Suckling.

Valdespino Fino “Inocente” Sherry, Jerez, Spain (Geoff)

This wine is still fermented in American oak barrels, an expensive, labor-intensive process that most sherry makers have abandoned in favor of using large stainless steel tanks. Using the old process imparts complexity and flavor to the wine, which features notes of chalk, dried hay, and sea salt and a yeasty minerality. Rated 94pts by Robert Parker. The grapes are sourced from a famous Jerez vineyard, Marcharnudo, owned by Valdespino since 1264.
