WINES TO TASTE SATURDAY 2-6pm

Tetramythos Retsina, Greece (Andrew)

Most wine lovers recoil with fear at the mention of “Retsina”, but this version is a lovely exception. Retsina has a 2000 year history in Greece, where Greeks used pine resin to prevent oxidation and preserve their wine in their amphora before glass bottles were invented, resulting in an often distasteful piney aroma and flavor in the wine. This organic Retsina shows restraint with the pine resin, instead displaying pear, beeswax and honey fruit and a tangy, dry finish. Try with salads or light seafood preparations.

Plavac 2016 Peljesac, Croatia (Tim)

Our ongoing search for a new Croatian wine ended here, with an elegant, lovely red made from the Plavac grape from the Peljesac peninsula in Croatia. This medium-bodied, fruit forward red also had a nice earthy quality, with an almost Nebbiolo-esque quality.

Busca 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma, California (Aron)

Shumi Zigu, Republic of Georgia (Andres)

Enjoy this Port styled wine from Shumi winery in the Kakheti region in the Republic of Georgia.  “Shumi” means genuine, undiluted wine, while “Zigu” translates to dessert. Made from a large variety of indigenous and foreign grapes, wine brandy and Chacha, this tastes decided like Port with flavors and aromas of almonds, raisins, and wild berries. Try with chocolate!

WINES TASTED SUNDAY 1-4pm

Jean Louis Denois Classique Brut, Limoux, France (Pat D.)

Jean-Louis Denois is widely considered to be a rising star in the Languedoc region of France.   Growing up the sixth generation of a Champagne making family, he decided to go his own way, planting his first grapes in 1991.  Even though his vineyards are in the Limoux appellation, his refusal to use the required Mauzac grape means he cannot use Limoux on the label. Instead, this is composed of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, organically grown and aged on lees for three years on racks. The result? A lovely, toasty, yeasty number that’s more reminiscent of a fine Champagne than a Cremànt of Southern France. Pass the caviar!

Regular Price: $23.99

Principe Pallavicini 2017 Frascati Superiore DOCG, Lazio, Italy (Aron)

Try with spaghetti alla carbonara, gnocci, or chicken Caesar salad.

Chateau La Graviere 2015 Les Terrasses Cotes de Bourg Rouge, Bordeaux (Jen & Jerry)

We just received this Bordeaux, made from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon from Cote de Bourg, an appellation just northwest of the city of Bordeaux, close to where the rivers Dordogne and Garonne rivers meet. It is one of the very oldest wine producing regions, originally planted with an ancestor of Cabernet by Romans in the second century.  This delicious red features ripe, juicy cassis and black fruit notes and present but refined tannins. Try with braised lamb or beef dishes! Rated 90pts Wine Enthusiast and “Best of Year” 2018 Issue.

Forlorn Hope Queen of the Sierra 2016 Red, Santa Barbara, California (Geoffrey)

A visit from Forlorn Hope winemaker Matthew Rorick revealed several wines we found to be very interesting and well-made, including this blend comprised largely of the Trousseau grape grown at high elevations in the Sierra Foothills.  Limestone and schist soils provide pronounced aromatics, lovely texture and bright acidity. Notes of cherry and plum are very pleasing in this harmonious red that will leave you not at all forlorn. Best at cellar temperature, try with roast chicken, chicken pot pie or pork tacos.

Borne 2015 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, California (Pat D.)

Anderson Valley enjoys wide diurnal range, with temperature swings of 40-50 degrees in one day not uncommon. This sets to stage for great Pinot Noir making, this version displaying red cherries, peppercorn, cranberry and clove. Aged 11 months in French oak, this Pinot exudes a pleasing silky texture. Try with pork tenderloin or salmon steaks.

Cantine Menhir 2017 Verdeca IGT, Puglia, Italy (Tim)

Verdeca is a little-known Italian white wine grape from Puglia, the “heel” of the Italian boot. Featuring Meyer lemon, fresh tarragon, minerally rock notes and bright acid, this will pair nicely with charcuterie and hard cheeses, seafood or simple pasta preparations. Certified Organic.

Hobo Wines 2017 “Camp” Chardonnay, Sonoma County, California (Andres)

Winemaker Kenny Likitprakong sources grapes through relationships with growers throughout Sonoma County with an emphasis on selecting growers who farm responsibly. “Hobo” refers to Kenny’s wandering fruit sourcing, and not having his own “home” vineyard.  The wine is made employing all native yeasts and neutral oak, allowing a true expression of Chardonnay to shine through. Exuding fresh tropical fruits and a creamy vanilla texture, the crisp finish has you reaching for another glass.

Chateau Tauzinat 2015 l’Hermitage, St.-Emilion, Bordeaux (Pat)

A Bordeaux from St-Emilion is an excellent choice for a special beef or lamb dinner. This version, from the excellent 2015 vintage, shows beautiful briar and woodland aromatics, as well as strawberry, blackberry, cassis notes and a touch of spice, all in a nicely structured package. The soils are dominated by clay and limestone.  This is a property of the famed Moueix family, whose presence in Pomerol (Chateau Taillefer in 1923) preceded their acquisition of Chateau Tauzinat in 1953. Tauzinat’s history dates back prior to 1789 when it was owned by the Carles family under the reign of King Louis XVI.
