Menhir Quota 31 2020, Salento, Italy (Avery)
Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Italy is home to the Salento vineyards where the Primitivo grapes for this wine are grown. The word Primitivo is derived from the Latin “early ripening”, as an Italian monk noticed the grape ripened before the other grapes in his vineyard. If you enjoy California Zinfandels, Primitivo is a great alternative as they are almost genetically identical. Featuring jammy plum and blackberry fruit notes, this bold wine with chewy tannins would pair wonderfully with braised leg of lamb, smoked meats, or Italian sausage with pasta.

Raventos I Blanc 2021 Blanc de Blancs Cava, Spain (Aron)
The grapes for this dry sparkling wine come from a vineyard over 40 years old called the “Vinha del Llac”, consisting of clay soils and calcareous bedrock with incrusted pebbles, which gives the wine wonderful structure. In addition to the typical Xarello, Parellada and Macabeu indigenous grapes that make up most Spanish Cava, Raventos incorporated Malvasia de Sitges, a nearly extinct varietal located on the property that now makes up 1.5 hectares of their plantings. This rare grape is naturally high in acidity but also adds volume and aromatic complexity. This Cava is a more affordable example of Raventos sparkling, as we previously carried their beautiful yet pricey “de la Finca”. With many Barolo prices sneaking up to the $75+ range, we found this version to represent particularly good value. In rather stark contrast to many of his fellow Austrian winemakers with charming historic cottage estates, Leo Hillinger has created an ultra-modern facility complete with sleek design, a helicopter landing pad, and incorporating the latest developments in energy efficiency. Blaufrankisch is a crazy sounding varietal dating back to the 18th century in Austria, likely made from crossing the even more crazy-sounding varietals Sbulzina and Weiber Heunisch. The grape is also known as “Lemberger” in Germany, or “Kekfrankos” in Hungary. Klemens Weber 2021 Riesling Halbtrocken, Pfalz, Germany (Aron)
Kelmens Weber is a small, family run operation in the Pfalz region of Germany. The name Pfalz derives from the Latin word for palace, “palatinus”. Alain Geoffroy 2022 Petit Chablis, France (Pat)
This 100% Chardonnay from the Chablis region of Burgundy shows those characteristic flavors of apple, pear, citrus, and stony minerality from the limestone Kimmeridgian soils. And while the vineyards of Petit Chablis are sometimes considered less prestigious than other Chablis vineyards, it doesn’t mean the wines are not worth serious consideration. Well-made wines from Petit Chablis can provide tremendous value and are often better than their Chablis AOC counterparts. Try this version with oysters, sushi, grilled fish, or roasted chicken.

We were delighted after tasting this wine from one of our favorite Cornas producers, Vincent Paris. Made from Viognier and Roussanne grapes planted to granite-rich soils, this sees only stainless steel in production, and like many of Vincent’s wines, display an interesting combination of power and freshness. Peach, apricot and minerally notes are delightful in this dry yet exuberant white, excellent to pair with many cheeses and cured meats, chicken satay with peanut sauce, or baked ham with roasted root vegetables.

G.D. Vajra 2023 “Rosabella” Vino Rosato, Italy (Pat)
Spring hails the arrival of the fresh 2023 Rosè releases, like this version from Piedmont producer Vajra. Made primarily from Nebbiolo, this dry Rosè reveals notes of jasmine, roses, raspberries along with a lush savoriness that is all but irresistible. This is a saignee method rosato, made by “bleeding off” a portion of red must from fermentation before full color extraction takes place. This would make a brilliant aperitif, or pair wonderfully with seafood or cheeses.

Ricudda 2020 Chianti Classico DOCG, Italy (Jen & Jerry)
This pretty version of Tuscan Sangiovese from the Chianti region comes from an elbow-shaped property (the name Ricudda derives from the French word for elbow “Recoude”) that has been producing wine since the 15th century. The wine ages in small Tuscan oak barrels for 12 months, as is the requirement for wines labeled “Chianti Classico”. Intense cherry fruit notes with slight hints of oak mark this structured wine with subtle spiciness on the finish. Chianti’s signature acidity makes this a natural pairing for meals with a tomato-based sauce, such as lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs, but will also match salumi with fennel and pecorino cheese.

Keuka Lake Vineyards 2020 Vignoles Methode Ancestrale Petillant, New York (Tim)
If you’ve never heard of the Vignoles grape, you’re likely not alone. Made by crossing two other obscure grapes Seibel and Pinot de Corton, it’s a highly aromatic grape grown primarily in the Finger Lakes region of New York. This is an off-dry (similar to most Prosecco), lightly sparkling wine made as a Petillant Naturel, or “Pet Nat”, where the wine is bottled before the initial fermentation is completed. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, you can see the cloudy appearance and the bits of sediment settled on the bottom, which is normal for wines made in this way. Tasty with notes of mango, pineapple and a little leesy brioche, we thought this would be a wonderful wine to bring on a picnic…it’s delicious on its own or with a variety of snacks.

Argiolas 2023 “Costamalino” Vermentino de Sardegna, Italy (Jerry)
Vermentino is one of our favorite Italian white wine varietals, being flush with acidity and complex with notes ranging from pine and mint to white peach and citrus. Franco and Giuseppe Argiolas run the estate, which they inherited from their father Antonio, who died in 2009 at the age of 102. They have focused on modernizing their viticultural efforts, reducing yields and improving grape quality, and focusing solely on native Sardinian varietals. This particular wine growing region of France was completely destroyed in 1870, 1914, and 1939 by wars. The ever-resilient people replanted and the Cotes de Toul AOP is again flourishing. Auxxerois is the grape in this refreshing white wine, an aromatic variety of Pinot Blanc that was developed in Lorraine intended for Sparkling wine production. In this instance, it’s a still wine, round and harmonious with apple and pear notes.
