August Staff Picks

Vera Vinho Verde, Portugal (Tim)

Perhaps unfamiliar sounding grapes Arinto, Azal, and Loureiro are all estate grown in this Vinho Verde by Vera.  “Vera” translates to “true”, the wines being a reflection of the maritime climate of Northern Portugal and the granite and schist soils of the estate. Low residual sugar and a very light carbonation make this just a bit more serious Vinho Verde. Showing grapefruit, lime, mineral with bright acidity and slight effervescence, this is a wonderful aperitif or summer sipper.

Claudio Quarta 2021 Greco di Tufo, Campania, Italy (Aron)

Campania, an area perhaps best known for the beautiful Amalfi coastline, is also home to vineyards growing Aglianico, Negroamaro, Fiano, and Greco di Tufo.  Tufo is the name of a tiny village in the center of the region where tuff-laden volcanic soil is the norm, and this soil type imparts wonderful minerality to this dry white wine. Flavor notes include lime, apple, pear and apricot and make this a delightful summer wine. Pair with traditional Campanian dishes, like clams and garbanzo beans served with grilled bread, or spaghetti with colatura di alici di cetara (a form of marinated anchovy-based condiment), or Italian American fare such as chicken or shrimp-topped Caesar salad.

Banyan 2022 Gewurztraminer, Monterey County, California (Griffin)

HOBO Wine Company has a habit of pumping out some unusual varietals from the varied Sonoma landscape, and this wine is no exception. Gewurztraminer is a grape grown largely in Germany and Alsace, but takes a turn in Monterey County here.  “Banyan” was developed with the sole purpose of making wine to pair with the Southeast Asian cuisine that one of the HOBO founders grew up eating. Just a touch of sweetness at 5.7g/L residual sugar balances the acidity. Savory fruit notes, ginger spice and gorgeous floral aromatics are enchanting and keep you reaching for the glass. Thai food or sushi is a great pairing here, but this will also work well with washed rind cheeses such as Munster.

Galicia is an area known for an amazing variety and abundance of seafood.  From scallops to crabs, oysters to octopus, the food lends itself to simple pan or grill preparations with a squeeze of juicy citrus, perfect to pair with a white wine like Albariño! This version boasts melon and honey aromas with flavors of nectarine and salty melon, all accompanied by mild acidity.

Thevenet 2021 Macon PierreClos, Burgundy France (Jen & Jerry)

Jean Claude Thevenet took over the estate in 1971 from this father Raymond, only to pass away at the too-young age of 54. Now his three sons Benjamin, Jonathan, and Aurelien run the estate with their mother Helene.  The grapes for this Chardonnay come from two select parcels in Macon named Margot and Chavigne.  The wine is aged for a period with the lees, lending weight and texture but the wine sees no oak. The result is a fresh Chardonnay showing bright notes of green apple, ripe pear, thyme and wet stone. Enjoy with local crab cakes or rockfish.

Folk Machine Rosè, Arroyo Seco, California (Griffin)

Folk Machine was established in 2012 as the “Pinot Noir” arm of the HOBO Wine Company, but has since expanded to include an esoteric assortment of grapes, from Charbono to Grenache to Valdeguie.  This light, fresh, almost savory example of their work is made from the Gamay grape. Pale pink from a minimal amount of skin contact time, this features bright cherry notes and minerality. Committed to sustainability, Folk Machine uses recycled bottling material (thus the greenish hue of the bottle). Try this dry and elegant Rosè with pizza or light grilled fare.

The Smugglers Boot 2021 Pinot Noir, Cape South Coast, South Africa (Pat)

The name “Smugglers Boot” refers to the practice of winemakers hiding cuttings in Wellington boots to transport into the country during the South African trade embargo. We found this to be Burgundian in style, made entirely of French clones and with minimal oak treatment; showing savory red fruit, pomegranate and earth notes, fresh acidity and a long supple finish.  Enjoy with grilled salmon, pork tenderloin or seared tuna steaks.

Grochau Cellars “Convivial” Red, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

John Grochau worked for Erath and Brick House Wines before starting his own gig at Grochau Cellars in 2002.  This blend of Pinot Noir and Gamey, similar to Burgundy’s Passetoutgrain concept, is bursting with pretty ripe fruit. Light-bodied and not tannic, this would be an excellent red to enjoy alongside a cheese and charcuterie platter, or with a slight chill on a picnic dinner.

Cesari 2020 Justo Rosso, Veneto, Italy (Jen & Jerry)

Cesari was established in 1936 with the aim of becoming a world-class Amarone producer; their wines are now proudly exported throughout the World. This wine is an example of one of their delicious and much more affordable table wines. Made from a combination of Corvina and Merlot, this wine is an “appassimento” style, meaning the grapes are dried for about 20 days (the “just right”, or “justo” amount of time) before fermentation. This wine is loaded with ripe cherry fruit notes and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel…try with aged cheeses or grilled beef or venison.

Alain de la Treille 2022 Merlot, France (Aron)

We thoroughly enjoyed trying this new Merlot from Alain de la Treille, a value brand from the Loire Valley of which we’ve also enjoyed their Sauvignon Blanc, Vouvray, and Pinot Noir.  Medium-bodied and showing cherry, plum and black pepper notes, this Merlot is the perfect weeknight wine and would pair nicely with grilled beef or lamb.

Famille Perrin 2020 “Nature” Cotes du Rhone, France (Andres)

From Famille Perrin, the same family responsible for the famed Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this red comprised of Grenache and Syrah is a wonderful example of their style. Pioneers in organic farming, the Perrin family brought Chateau Beaucastel through the organic certification process over 40 years ago, and this wine is also certified Organic by Ecocert.  Expressive with aromatics of violets and strawberries, the palate shows black fruits, pepper and Mediterranean herbs, finishing silky and long. Enjoy with grilled chicken or pork.

Twenty Rows 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California (Tim)

Even in the summertime, the occasion sometimes calls for a classically styled Napa red wine.  A special celebratory meal featuring grilled steaks or lamb chops would benefit from the rich structure of this Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2019, the rolling hills containing Serena’s vineyards were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Quattro Theory 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa, California (Tim)

We enjoyed tasting the line up from Quattro Theory recently, “Quattro” a reference to winemaker Landon Donley’s aim of bringing together four elements: vision, quality vines, precision winemaking, and finally, the experience of enjoying food and wine with friends.  We were particularly charmed by the Sauvignon Blanc, from some of the oldest Sauvignon plantings in Napa Valley in Calistoga. A small amount of Semillon adds a bit of roundness to the wine. Aromas of vanilla and vibrant stone and citrus fruit notes and fresh acidity make this a wonderful pairing with fresh oysters, lemon-herb roasted chicken, or salad topped with goat cheese.

Les Gentilhommes 2022 Macon-Peronne, France (Pat)

“Les Gentilhommes”, translating to “the gentlemen”, in this case refers to brothers Richard and Stephane Martin who make this Chardonnay in the village of Peronne in Burgundy.  A small 15% of the wine was aged in oak for 9months, while the remainder aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks. The wine is fresh with notes of peach and apple accented by fresh acidity and mineral tones. This is a no-brainer pairing with roast chicken, salmon, or certainly anything with crab!

Damien Martin was established in 1975, a 2.5 hectare estate with limestone rich soils in the village of Davaye. It’s now grown to 20 hectares, focusing on the production of Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir. This example of their work is a brooding expression of Pinot Noir, featuring dark wild berry notes and super silky tannins.  This would be an excellent match for a charcuterie board or grilled salmon or herb-rubbed chicken.

Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Verduno Pelaverga, Piedmont, Italy (Pat)

Pelaverga Piccolo is the name of the grape, a varietal unique to the commune of Verduno in Piedmont. Fratelli Alessandria could make a good deal more money dedicating this vineyard space to Barolo production but this wine holds a special place in the hearts of the family.  Known for beautiful aromatics, this wine gives off layers of rhubarb, wet earth, and rosebud scents.  Enjoy this lovely light to medium-bodied, velvety-textured red with good acidity with pizza, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, or roasted poultry.

We found this delicious Tempranillo to be a great value, especially for a Biodynamically produced wine from Ribera del Duero! Aged in French and American oak for 4 months, this bold red shows dark fruit notes, mineral and earth tones, and smooth tannins culminating in a long, pleasing finish. Fall is the perfect time to experiment with Bordeaux, this example comprised largely of Merlot and Petit Verdot from the highly esteemed (and tiny!) Pomerol appellation and the great vintage of 2018. This relatively affordable Pomerol is the second wine of the estate Chateau Mazeyres, boasting black fruit and licorice notes and tannins that require a delicious plate of lamb chops or charcuterie and cheese. Josh Phelps “Grounded” 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, California (Andres)

Josh Phelps grew up in Napa Valley, the son of famed winemaker Chris Phelps.  Chris Phelps is the founder and winemaker at Ad Vivum, and before that enjoyed stints at Chateau Pètrus in Bordeaux as well as Dominus and Caymus in Napa Valley. Dad is focused on producing $100+ wines, while son has honed in on producing great value wines such as this example. Grapes selected from Central Coast and Northern interior vineyards of California were harvested and transported to the winery in St Helena. Boasting black cherry, blackberry, cocoa and toasty oak notes, this silky smooth red would pair wonderfully with grilled skirt steak or cheeseburgers.

Petite Sirah originated in France in the 1800s, where it was known as Durif. This hybrid grape was created by crossing Syrah with a relatively unknown varietal Peloursin. Now, it’s primarily grown in California, Washington State and Australia. There’s nothing petite about this bold, muscular red, sporting plum and blueberry notes with touches of vanilla and nutmeg from aging in American and Hungarian oak.  Try with rich meals such as Mongolian glazed short ribs, blue cheese topped burgers, or steak au poivre.

Bastgen Kestener Paulinshofberg 2021 Spatlese Riesling, Mosel, Germany (Aron)

Paulinshofberg is one of the most prized vineyards in Mosel, covering a small 9 hectare footprint, dominated with slate soils that force the vine roots to struggle deeper to seek moisture in times of drought.  These slate soils also impart a minerally stamp on the wine, in addition to the already pleasurable lichi and pineapple tones and crisp, electric acidity. Weingut Bastgen was established in 1850 and is run by husband-wife team Armin Vogel and Mona Bastgen. Bastgen is one of 40 members of the elite Bernkasteler Ring, an indication of the quality of their wines. This is a super value in our opinion, and would offer a wonderful pairing with roasted poultry, pork tenderloin or spicy Pad Thai.

Trefethen Eshcol 2021 Chardonnay, Napa, California (Aron)

While we have long been big fans of Trefethen Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, their “Eshcol” line features more affordable yet still estate-grown wines. The name Eshcol is a nod to the original historic estate, dating back to 1886 with building the winery in the center of Eshcol Ranch. This, their Chardonnay from select plots in Napa shows green apple, lemon, and tangerine notes with a long, lively finish.  The wine spends nine months in mostly used oak, giving it a surprising level of richness at this price point. Enjoy with chicken pot pie, rockfish topped with crab imperial or pecan-crusted baked salmon.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards Mountain White, South Africa (Tim)

A visit this week from the Thelema winemaker delighted us with their lineup. We found this white wine to offer particularly good value, a blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Viognier. Impressively, all of their wines are estate grown, set at the base of a large crater in the lush greenery of the South Easterly side of the Simonsberg Mountain. This crisp, clean, very dry white features bright acidity assisted by some depth and roundness from the Viognier addition.  Passionfruit, apricot and melon aromas are alluring but subtle, making this a great pairing with mild cheeses, oysters, or delicate seafood.

We brought this new Bordeaux in after a tasting of a selection of wonderful Rosenthal imported wines. This red showed particularly well. EnRoute 2021 “Brumaire” Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, California (Tim)

Cool climate and coastal fog make the Russian River Valley the ideal region for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which make up 70% of the region’s plantings. In fact, this wine is named “Brumaire”, which translates to “the month of mist” in French (brume=fog).  Fermented in barrel, the wine is then aged in French oak for 8 months (33% new). This full-bodied Chardonnay is rich with layers of fresh orchard peach, orange blossom, and mineral with subtle undertones of baking spice and toasted oak. Enjoy this juicy white wine with roasted chicken, vegetable lasagna, or pork chops in a creamy white wine sauce.

Menhir Quota 31 2020, Salento, Italy (Avery)

Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Italy is home to the Salento vineyards where the Primitivo grapes for this wine are grown. The word Primitivo is derived from the Latin “early ripening”, as an Italian monk noticed the grape ripened before the other grapes in his vineyard. If you enjoy California Zinfandels, Primitivo is a great alternative as they are almost genetically identical.  Featuring jammy plum and blackberry fruit notes, this bold wine with chewy tannins would pair wonderfully with braised leg of lamb, smoked meats, or Italian sausage with pasta.

Montaña Crianza 2019 Rioja, Spain (Jen & Jerry)

Oscar Montaña is the third generation of the family to manage the estate.  Montaña boasts a large number of vineyards with very old vines, largely from the immediate postphylloxera period, including some rare Graciano vines.  We’ve long carried the Montaña Reserva Rioja but were impressed after tasting this Crianza with the value it provides! Made from 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano aged 12 months in French and American oak, this shows ripe berry and cassis notes with a hint of cedary oak and touches of spice and leather, this would pair well with roasted or stewed beef.

Raventos I Blanc 2021 Blanc de Blancs Cava, Spain (Aron)

The grapes for this dry sparkling wine come from a vineyard over 40 years old called the “Vinha del Llac”, consisting of clay soils and calcareous bedrock with incrusted pebbles, which gives the wine wonderful structure. In addition to the typical Xarello, Parellada and Macabeu indigenous grapes that make up most Spanish Cava, Raventos incorporated Malvasia de Sitges, a nearly extinct varietal located on the property that now makes up 1.5 hectares of their plantings. This rare grape is naturally high in acidity but also adds volume and aromatic complexity. This Cava is a more affordable example of Raventos sparkling, as we previously carried their beautiful yet pricey “de la Finca”.  Pair with a high-quality Manchego cheese or other sheep’s milk cheese, or with sushi!

Chateau de la Greffiere 2021 Macon la Roche Vineuse Sous le Bois, Burgundy, France (Jen & Jerry)

Macon la Roche Vineuse is an appellation within the Maconnais region of Burgundy, with soils ranging from fossilly limestone to marl.  “Sous le bois” translates to “under the woods”, referring to where the vineyard that produces the grapes for this wine lies. This white Burgundy presents great value, a 100% Chardonnay unencumbered by clunky oak, displaying notes of apple, peach, pink grapefruit and a hint of brioche. Lodali Moscato d’Asti, Italy (Avery)

In Piedmont, winemakers have cultivated the Moscato Bianco grape in the hilltop town of Asti since the 14th Century.  Low in alcohol, this was the perfect wine for Medieval field workers to consume during lunch without slowing down productivity! Moscato d’Asti wines are all frizzante, or lightly sparkling. Moscato produced outside of Asti can be still or frizzante. Juicy stone fruit and fresh citrus flavors accentuate this lightly sweet wine, perfect for pairing well-chilled with lemon cheesecake, or with very spicy fare such as curry or hot wings.

Jean-Luc Colombo 2022 Cape Bleue Rosè, France (Pat)

Jean-Luc Colombo devoted much of his life to his passion for the Syrah grape, starting with the purchase of a vineyard overlooking Cornas in Northern Rhone. Over time he established the “Centre Oenologique des Cotes du Rhone”, a center for the study of Rhone wines. His work was awarded the French Legion of Honor award.  In the early 2000s, he decided to return to his roots, investing in some parcels near Provence along the “Blue Coast”. This is where he grows the Syrah and Mourvedre that make up this dry Rosè. Showing notes of strawberry, bing cherry and raspberry, this palest of pink yet full-bodied wine can be served as aperitif or with baked fish, creamy soups, or creamy pasta with sun-dried tomatoes. Carl Ehrhard 2021 Spatburgunder, Germany (Aron)

Weingut Carl Ehrhard was founded in 1815, located on German’s Rhein River in the town of Rudesheim.  All the grapes are grown organically and biodynamically, and fermentation takes place slowly, from indigenous yeasts. Only large neutral oak casks are used, and there is no fining or filtration and no sulfur added. There might be some sediment settled in the bottom of the bottle-this is normal! Carl and his wife Petra and their three daughters farm 22 acres of Riesling and Pinot Noir. This carefully made elegant Pinot Noir shows rose petal aromas and bright fruit with spice and minerality on the palate. This is an excellent pairing with wild mushrooms, salmon, or beef tenderloin.

Villa Rosa 2016 Barolo DOCG, Italy (Avery)

With many Barolo prices sneaking up to the $75+ range, we found this version to represent particularly good value. This wine was created by Opici, a producer/importer with an affinity for Italian wines. Villa Rosa is an homage to founder Hubert Opici’s late wife Rose. Made from 100% Nebbiolo, this spends two years in French and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by one year aging in bottle. The nose shows rose and violet aromatics while dark fruits lavish the palate with hints of spice and leather. Round yet structured tannins call for a plate of long roasted beef or Osso Bucco.

Hillinger 2019 Blaufrankisch, Austria (Jen & Jerry)

In rather stark contrast to many of his fellow Austrian winemakers with charming historic cottage estates, Leo Hillinger has created an ultra-modern facility complete with sleek design, a helicopter landing pad, and incorporating the latest developments in energy efficiency.  Blaufrankisch is a crazy sounding varietal dating back to the 18th century in Austria, likely made from crossing the even more crazy-sounding varietals Sbulzina and Weiber Heunisch. The grape is also known as “Lemberger” in Germany, or “Kekfrankos” in Hungary.   This example by Hillinger is intense with earthy spice notes, blueberry and blackberry flavors accented by hints of clove and pepper. Rich fruit, robust tannins and spice make this a great pairing with beef stew, cottage pie, or spicy beef ramen.

Keermont 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa (Tim)

Named for the farm called “Keerweder” that once occupied the land, the name actually translates to ”blocked again”, referring to the early settlers’ trouble passing through the valleys. With vineyards located around Guardian Peak, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines made here have been compared stylistically to Napa’s Howell Mountain. This particular vintage comprised of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a 10% addition of Cabernet Franc aged 15 months in oak boasts scents of blackberry, mint and fennel, with cherry and blackcurrant fruit on the palate and a hint of wood and pepper on the finish. Klemens Weber 2021 Riesling Halbtrocken, Pfalz, Germany (Aron)

Kelmens Weber is a small, family run operation in the Pfalz region of Germany.  The name Pfalz derives from the Latin word for palace, “palatinus”.  The wines here are not influenced by the Rhine River as many German wines are but instead by the protective Haardt mountain range. Further south and sunnier than their Mosel and Rheingau counterparts, ripeness is all but ensured here. Just off-dry (“halbtrocken”=half-dry), this delightful Riesling is crisp, fruity and refreshing, with generous peach notes, intriguing spice tones and bright acidity! This is a great wine for sushi and spicy fare.

Quivira 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Mendocino County, California (Jen & Jerry)

A recent visit from Quivira and La Follette winemaker Hugh Chappelle proved to be very rewarding! Mr. Chappelle, a former winemaker for the highly esteemed Flowers and Lynmar, came to Quivira in 2010, drawn by the unique terroir of the estate.  We loved the whole line of wines, but felt this Sauvignon Blanc proved to be a particularly wonderful value.  The nose is exuberantly expressive of lemon blossom and jasmine, while melon and citrus notes cross the palate with excellent acidity and mineral tones. The flavor and texture combine for a super harmonious wine, great to pair with pan seared fish with lemons and capers, or Sicilian fish stew. Girasole 2022 Pinot Blanc, Mendocino County, California (Avery)

Pinot Blanc is a varietal that thrives primarily in the Alsace region of France, but also flourishes in Italy, Austria, Oregon, and in this case, Mendocino County! The Girasole estate is responsible for roughly 15 of the 425 acres of Pinot Blanc grown in California. This expression is dry yet overtly fruity, exclaiming citrus, peach, honey and almond notes, and earning a 92pt and “Best Buy” nod from Wine Enthusiast.  This would make a delightful pairing with a green salad topped with feta cheese, apples and walnuts or with a creamy pasta with smoked salmon and peas.

Vincent Dampt 2022 Chablis, France (Tim)

Supply chain issues dwindled our Chablis supply a bit, but a recent arrival of Dampt wines has restored it to its former glory! Vincent Dampt came from a long line of esteemed winemakers in Chablis, yet enrolled himself in wine school in Beaune at the tender age of 14. He worked for the iconic Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet and later worked in Jura and New Zealand to further broaden his perspectives. In 2004, he inherited some small vineyard plots and from there has been carving out his own estate and reputation ever since. This gorgeous example of his Chardonnay shows lively notes of green apple, lemon curd and a hint of peppercorn on the mineral-tinged finish. This wine sees no oak, making for a wonderfully fresh yet complex expression of Chardonnay. Enjoy with cream of crab soup, steamed mussels, or savory cheese puffs.

La Follette 2021 Las Primeros Pinot Noir, California (Avery)

We’ve long carried the La Follette Chardonnay but recently tasted the Pinot Noir during a sampling with winemaker Hugh Chappelle (as referred to in Quivira Sauvignon Blanc notes). The winemaking team employs a blending of techniques both traditional and modern in their work, reflected in the label which is an illustration from a rare first-edition French viticultural manual from 1847. This is a “Pinot-lovers’ Pinot”, elegant with subtle tones of wild berry, dark cherry, herbs and a persistent savory finish, perhaps a repeating of the Pacific Ocean climate influence.  This wine would pair wonderfully with pan seared salmon with roasted brussel sprouts.

Hillinger 2020 Pinot Gris, Austria (Aron)

Weingut Leo Hillinger is an ultra-modern wine facility located in the Jois community within the Burgenland wine growing region of Austria. The long history of Jois was first documented in 1217 as “Gyois”. In the mid-1500s, the Hungarian Queen Maria granted the village the right to label its wine barrels with the letter “G” due to the excellent quality of the wines. While Hillinger is known for their powerful reds and zippy Gruner Veltliners, this delicious and affordable white wine is yet another example of their breadth. This Pinot Gris would provide a lovely aperitif- a palate pleaser that’s easily paired with a wide variety of foods from olives to various cheeses and charcuterie. Miravigna Rosso, Italy (Pat)

This field blend red from the Abruzzo region of Italy brings to mind happy times, a simple glass of red in some ancient Italian village’s osteria alongside a slice of pizza or some antipasti. A slight chill makes this mulberry and sour cherry fruited red with smooth tannins all the more pleasurable.

Lady Hill 2021 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Avery)

It’s no wonder proprietors Jerry and Elain Owen named their winery “Lady Hill”, after having 9 children (8 girls and 1 boy), plus, with a history of strong female role models in the family since settling in the region in the 1850s. Now in the fifth generation of working the land, they farm with an aim towards sustainability. A portion of this 100% Pinot Noir is aged in new French oak, and the rest in used French oak for 12 months. This elegant red shows complex black and red bramble fruit intermingled with earthy moss and baking spice. Pair with baked fish or roasted pork tenderloin with mushroom risotto.

Gran Passione 2022 Rosso, Veneto, Italy (Andres)

We’re familiar with the Amarone and Valpolicella Ripasso wines of the Veneto, but this satisfying blend is a fraction of the price of its more famous brethren. This is a rich, full-bodied red made from Corvina and Merlot grapes, boasting blackberry and black cherry fruit notes with great structure and acidity.  The boldness of this wine makes for a great pairing with roasted beef or venison dishes, or as in the Veneto with a quality cut of aged asiago and some salami.

Barnard Griffin Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington (Jen & Jerry)

Rob Griffin grew up in Napa Valley and knew he wanted a wine career at a young age. He enrolled in UC Davis wine program at 17 and after gaining some experience in Napa moved to Columbia Valley, Washington. Fast forward to recent news where he celebrated his 41st vintage and was recognized as the longest practicing winemaker in the state of Washington. Ripe plum and cherry notes characterize this 100% Merlot that came from four vineyards located in Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley, and Red Mountain. The wine was aged 19 months in both new and neutral barriques. This would make a wonderful pairing with lamb or Spanish ham.
