March Staff Picks

Quinta da Cabriz Dao White, Portugal (Aron)

People are loving Portuguese reds but the white wines are worth a taste and similarly provide good value. Made from perhaps unfamiliar sounding Encruzado, Malvasia and Arinto grapes, this white shows pretty aromatics of lemon, flint, pine and mint with a fresh, fruity crisp palate. Try with shellfish, sushi, or Moroccan chicken tagine.

Poseidon 2020 Estate Chardonnay, Carneros, California (Pat)

This rich, medium-full bodied Chardonnay displays notes of hazelnut, pastry, apricot and orchard fruit, with a pleasing creamy texture and classic California spiced oak note from 16 months in Hungarian barrels of varying age (Co-founder Peter Molnar has ownership in a Hungarian cooperage where they source their barrels).  The Poseidon Vineyard, located at the corner where the Napa River and Carneros Creek meet, was planted in 1973 by the Molnar Family.  The Carneros maritime climate delivers the cool, foggy mornings and warm days that are perfect growing conditions for slow-ripening, high quality Chardonnay.  Try with oven-baked salmon, cream of crab or butternut squash soup, or a garlic butter roasted chicken with potatoes.

Fernlands 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (David)

Signature Marlborough guava, passionfruit and lime notes shine through on this zippy and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes for this wine were from vines grown in an ancient riverbed comprised of silty loam soil. This would be a nice accompaniment to a kale salad with lemon garlic dressing, pan seared rockfish with a lemon caper sauce, or pork meatballs with a Thai dipping sauce.

Rallo Bianco Maggiore 2020 Grillo, Sicily, Italy (Tim)

From Marsala in the western part of Sicily, this delightful white wine made from the Grillo grape shows a bevy of citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit notes with a long, minerally finish and great acidity. The Vesco family farms their high hillside vineyards organically, taking advantage of the slightly cooler temperatures and greater diurnal temperature changes.  This wine would be delightful alongside pasta with pesto sauce, calamari, or a hot bowl of tortellini soup.

Bonny Doon 2021 Picpoul, Arroyo Seco, California (Jen & Jerry)

While nothing quite beats the value of our $10 Picpoul from Southern France, we thought this California version was a delicious take on the grape.  “Pique-poule”, which roughly translates to “lip-stinger”, is a fixture on Southern France tables; lip smacking acidity and a round texture are hallmarks of the wine that appeals to a wide variety of palates.  Enjoy as an aperitif, or pair with vegetable lasagna or oven baked prawns.

OC & Co Rosè, France (Andres)

This dry Rosè comprised of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah is exuberant with notes of strawberries, citrus and tropical fruit finishing with mineral and saline tones. This boldness is what we look for in a “winter” Rosè, a wine that can stand up to seafood risotto, stuffed pork chops with roasted root vegetables, or a steaming bowl of sesame noodles.

Chateau Prignac 2018 Mèdoc, Bordeaux, France (Andres)

This classic blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from Bordeaux exhibits red berry and spicy clove notes with a round mouthfeel and ripe tannins.  The Mèdoc is the largest of the famous Bordeaux wine regions, starting at the city of Bordeaux and stretching northward for 50 miles along the left bank of the Gironde River.  Gravel soils and maritime climate make this area ideal for the production of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Try this wine with leg of lamb, shepherd’s pie, or beef stew!

Chateau Fontanès 2020 “Les Traverses” Pays d’Oc, France (Tim)

A kind of unusual concept, this Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, a region more known for the production of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah.  In fact, the grapes for this bottling all come from the Pic St Loup appellation, but since Cabernet Sauvignon is not one of the permitted varietals grown in the appellation, it wears the table wine label of “Vin de Pays”.  Nonetheless delicious, this is showing plump, juicy blackcurrant, ripe berry and bramble notes, with very little tannins, making it great to pair with simple appetizers or cheese and charcuterie.

Correggia Roero, Italy (Jen & Jerry)

Matteo Correggia contributed significantly to the establishment of Roero as a recognized DOCG before tragically passing in a tractor accident in 2001. Other Roero producers came together to help the family finish the harvest that year, and his wife Ornella and now grown children Giovanni and Briggita still run the estate today.  Located just North of Alba in the Piemonte region, Roero is sometimes overlooked for it’s more famous Barolo and Barbaresco brethren, however, is capable of producing beautiful Nebbiolo such as this example at a fraction of the price. Aged six months in barrel, this shows violet aromatics, intense red cherry fruit notes, brisk acidity and good tannins, wonderful for pairing with slow cooked beef short ribs, pasta carbonara or a delicious platter of salumi & formaggi.

Envinate 2021 Albahra, Spain (Aron)

“Envinate” translates to “wine yourself”, the brainchild of four friends who studied wine together at University in Alicante.  They apply old-fashioned farming and wine making methods to exceptional single parcels in Ribeira Sacra, the Canary Islands, and through the Iberian Peninsula, making what some consider to be the most exciting new wines in Spain today. This blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera and the 30% the rare Moravia Agria is grown in Almansa, at the Southeastern tip of Castilla-la Mancha and sees no oak. Bursting with notes of fresh wild berries and herbs with dusty tannins and fresh acidity this would pair well with paella, or arroz con pollo.

This is comprised of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% each Petit Verdot and Malbec, 1% each Petite Sirah and Syrah from all estate grown vines planted to the volcanic soils of the Red Hills in Lake County.  Aged 18 months in Hungarian oak, this big red will pair with well-marbled steaks for a special celebration!

Bodegas Naverran Brut Cava, Spain (Aron)

This dry Cava is classified a “Brut Nature”, meaning no sugar is added during the fermentation process, landing it in the driest category of Sparkling wines.  From the Penedes region of Spain this shows bright Meyer lemon, green apple and mineral notes and richness on the palate from 12 months aging on the lees.  Use this as a celebratory toast, a refreshing aperitif, or to pair well with appetizers ranging from cheeses to calamari.

Julien Schaal 2020 Riesling “Rosacker Calcaire” Grand Cru, Alsace, France (Pat)

This dry, terroir driven Riesling is from a limestone dominated site just north of Hunawihr, a small village between Ribeauville and Riquewihr in the picturesque Alsace region of France. The Rosacker Vineyard dates back to 1483 and is one of Alsace’s most esteemed Grand Cru vineyards, named Rosacker for the abundant wild roses growing around the edges of the property. With just a hint of petrol aromas this elegant, beautifully textured wine has an underlying powerful mineral core.  This wine will pair well with a variety of cheeses, a creamy goat cheese or medium-bodied Gruyere or cheddar, or could also be a great pairing with a deliciously salty ham and scalloped potatoes.

Dawn Chorus 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (David)

From the Hawke’s Bay appellation on the East Coast of Aoteroa of New Zealand, this Sauvignon Blanc shows bold notes of grapefruit, mineral and passionfruit; an exuberant wine with plenty of bright acidity, designed to pair wonderfully with grilled or sauteed fish or raw oysters. This is also a good wine to use with meals containing the difficult-to-pair  accompaniments asparagus and cilantro! “Dawn Chorus” is a nod to the harmonious birdsong at daybreak.

Cave de Lugny 2020 “Les Charmes” Macon-Villages, Burgundy, France (Tim)

Some of you may recognize this white Burgundy that was once part of our regular collection and is now back again. “Les Charmes” is a Maconnais vineyard site, also known for limestone-rich soils. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture and flavors of nuts, citrus and honey, it culminates with a touch of spice. Unoaked, this would pair nicely with a roast chicken, crab cakes, or a special Eggs Benedict brunch.

Domaine Corne Loupe 2022 Rosè, Tavel, France (Jen & Jerry)

Tavel is the only village dedicated exclusively to the production of Rosè…it’s no wonder they’ve mastered the concept!  Domaine Corne Loupe’s version provides exceptional value. Sadly, every year it sells out midsummer. Comprised of 60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre, Clairette and Carignan planted to white stone and “galets roules” pebbled soils, it gets its dark pink hue from contact with the grape skins during the fermentation process.  Medium-bodied, this rosè is very dry with notes of cassis, persimmon, strawberry and blackcurrant, presenting an almost savory characteristic that lends very well to food pairing.

Lemelson 2021 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

Eric Lemelson first planted vines in Willamette Valley in 1995, and they’re still making great Willamette Valley Pinot Noir! They typically create a “Thea’s Selection” Pinot Noir, but yields were not high enough this vintage so all of their fruit went to the production of their straight Willamette Valley Pinot Noir-the quality therefore is elevated. From Dundee Hills and Yamhill Carlton AVAs, the wine is aged 8 months in 11% new French oak, providing an intense yet elegant expression of Pinot Noir; this would nicely accompany a smoked ham, or grilled salmon or beef tenderloin.

Even though Chateau Haut-Grelot was established in 1920, the team currently at the helm are the young, energetic Cèline and Julien Bonneau who were recently awarded “Best Young Talent” in Bordeaux.  This blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon comes specifically from Blaye-Cotes de Bordeaux, a district just across the Gironde River from the Mèdoc. Medium-bodied with rich plum fruit notes balanced by very subtle savory earth tones, this red has moderate oak treatment, making this an ideal pairing for beef or lamb!

William Clark 2019 Syrah, Columbia Valley, Washington (Aron)

This Syrah comes from the Southeast, slightly cooler corner of Horse Heaven Hills appellation of Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Showing blackberry, cherry and violet notes with just a hint of pepper, we really enjoyed the silky smooth texture!  “William Clark” pays homage to The Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804-1806) which crossed into Washington State and traveled down the rapid-laden Columbia River! Bresolin Bio Prosecco “Benny” Extra Brut, Italy (Aron)

This bubbly is a drier version of Prosecco made from the Glera grape in the Veneto region of Italy.  Made by three Bresolin brothers, they named this wine “Benny” for their father Beniamino, who imbued in them a love and respect of not only the land they farm but also the woods close to the vineyards filled with roe deer, wild boar and birds. This respect is why they chose to farm organically in the hills of Asolo.  This is bright, energetic and refreshing with notes of fresh crunchy green apple, zippy grapefruit and tangy pineapple yet finishes dry on the palate. This would be lovely paired with grilled fish, cheese and salumi, or as a celebratory aperitif. Saluti!

Josef Bauer 2021 Riesling Feuersbrunn, Niederosterreich, Austria (Pat)

Josef and Christine Bauer and their children are the fourth and fifth generation of the family managing this small ten-hectare estate just northeast of Vienna, an area replete with “loess” soils.  Loess is a German term meaning “loose”, referring to the easily crumbling soil that’s filled with minerals and easy to drain, making it ideal for wine cultivation. Here the Bauer family grows primarily Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, practicing organic farming. This dry (less than 7 g/L sugar) Riesling features generous aromas and flavors of ripe pears, white peaches, and zippy lemon zest which follow through to a fresh, juicy finish with lots of acidity and a touch of white pepper. This wine will elevate sushi or fish or chicken dishes with spicy elements.

Elton Bay wines are a nod to the beautiful, ruggedly mountainous South African coastline, largely undeveloped. Casa d’Ambra 2021 Forastera, Campania, Italy (Tim)

The unique volcanic isle of Ischia lies in the Tyrhennian Sea off the southwest coast of Italy as part of the Campania wine region.  Ischia is a quirky fishermen’s domain that was recently featured on Stanley Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” program. Food and wine are of course an integral part of the local culture! This dry white wine is made from the Forastera grape which thrives on the island. Vibrant and boldly textured, this wine delights with fresh notes of apricot, pear, almond, and hint of Mediterranean scrub. Rabbit stew is a staple on the island, but this wine will better pair with our local freshly prepared seafood alongside tomatoes, artichokes, and broccoli as is typical in Ischia.

Chronos 2021 Pinot Gris, Okanagan Valley, Canada (Jen & Jerry)

A far cry from the simple yet enjoyable Pinot Grigio table wines, this rich and elegant Pinot Gris serves up layers of flavor notes and textural components.  This is our first wine from the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in Canada, an area compared to France and Germany in viticultural capability with rich silt, sand and gravel over 10,000 year old glacial deposits. Featuring Granny Smith apple and stony minerality followed by layers of citrus, melon, peach and lemon notes, the finish is very long in the mouth. Rubus 2021 Private Selection Rueda, Spain (Andres)

“Rubus” translates to “raspberry” in Latin; it’s a name given to the genus of flowering plants in the rose family. But to us, it stands for great value wines created by and imported by importer/distributor Kysela Pere et Fils. This example of the brand is a 100% Verdejo from the Rueda region of Northern Spain. Featuring a round texture and bright citrus, apricot and jasmine notes, this would be a great pairing with bacon wrapped scallops, mussels, or clams. Dave McIntyre of the Washington Post declared this wine 2.5 stars and a “great value” at $15 recommended retail!

CVNE (Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España) was established by two brothers in 1879 and has grown to become a very large company with wineries throughout Rioja representing different quality levels and terroir. Their Cune line of wines represent great value for the price, and are still made in the original winery located near the train station in Haro. Pioneers in technological advances, Cune was the first Spanish winery to adopt gravity-led processes, increasing their sustainability. Made from Tempranillo grapes in the Rioja region of Spain, this dry Rosè is a dark pink hue, showing notes of strawberry, hibiscus and tart cranberry notes.  Medium-bodied, this can pair perfectly with grilled chicken, pork chops or pizza with spicy pepperoni.

Domaine Lèon Boesch 2020 “Les Jardins”, Alsace, France (Andres)

On the heels of a long line of winemakers dating back to 1640, Matthieu and Marie Boesch are the 11th generation in charge of the Domaine. Most of their production is focused on white wine, but this red comes from a small plot of Pinot Noir vines planted to limestone soils. The vines are farmed biodynamically and organically, and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels. Upon sampling this wine, we were indeed transported by the freshly picked ripe raspberry aromas to “les jardins”; bright cherry fruit notes and light damp earth tones confirmed the garden vibe. This would be a beautiful pairing with salmon, a charcuterie platter, or as suggested by the Boesch family, with “Boudin a la pomme”, a traditional French dish featuring blood sausage and apples.

From Calabria, Italy’s “toe of the boot”, this is a lighter weight red made from the relatively obscure Gaglioppo grape, known to be an offspring of Sangiovese. The town of Cirò is located on the Ionian Sea’s central coast, a hub of wine production for at least 3000 years. In fact, wine from Cirò was offered to victors of the ancient Olympics! Featuring notes of cherry, strawberry, earth and leather, this is a fantastic pairing for cured meats. 60% Carignan, 30% Garnacha, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon figure into the blend in this Priorat wine from vines planted to typical slate soils. Aged 12 months in Hungarian and American oak, this is a bright and juicy styled red by Eric Solomon. Red and black fruit, graphite, and leather notes mark this full-bodied wine. Manousakis Nostos 2021 Romeiko, Crete, Greece (Tim)

Ted Manousakis established the winery in 1993, returning to the verdant island of Crete he left at age 11. “Nostos” refers to a “yearning to come home”, a concept based in Greek literature going back to the Odyssey. Now Ted and his daughter Alexandra run the estate, organically producing a variety of traditional Greek wines, Rhone varietals and some lesser-known ancient indigenous varietals like Romeiko.  This dry, medium-bodied white shows gooseberry and citrus aromas and flavors with a touch of grassiness. This could be a good alternative to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.  Pair with oysters, ceviche, or a summer seafood soup with tomatoes and fresh herbs from the garden.

Bieler 2021 “Sabine” Rosè, Aix-en-Provence, France (Griffin)

While the largest Rosè producers are clustered in Cotes de Provence, the growers in Aix-en-Provence enjoy cool nights in the rugged, higher elevation vineyards. In fact, harvest here takes place on average two weeks later than Cotes de Provence, allowing for gentler ripening and more natural acidity. This wine is named for the winemaker’s daughter Sabine who was born in 2005, coinciding with the inaugural vintage of this delicious dry Rosè. Comprised primarily of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault, this strikes a balance of flavors ranging from wild raspberries, tea, rose petals, and wet stones.  Enjoy this wine with Nicoise salad or grilled flatbread topped with BBQ chicken and mozzarella cheese.

Hither & Yon 2021 Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia (Jen & Jerry)

We recently enjoyed a visit from Hither & Yon proprietor Malcolm Leask and were able to sample his impressive lineup of wines.  The name Hither & Yon refers to their 80 hectares consisting of 5 vineyard sites scattered through McLaren Vale. This Shiraz is made from grapes from each of those sites, gaining complexity from the different soil compositions, then after vinification spending 8 months in used French oak. Showing blueberry and mulberry notes, chocolate and spicy earth tones culminating in an ultra-smooth finish, this will be our go-to pick to pair with a grilled steak and potatoes with garlic and fresh rosemary.  Hither & Yon is devoted to conservation: while growing grapes they also work to restore natural habitat, create healthy corridors for the local birds and bees, and plant native species.  They have also earned the distinction of being the first certified carbon neutral winery in South Australia.

A renewed interest in lower alcohol and lower sugar content wines led us to this “Petite Chardonnay”, a joint project between Mas La Chevaliere and LaRoche with grapes sourced from the relatively cool Orb Valley and Limoux areas of France. This is a lighter Chardonnay with minimal oak treatment (only 7.5% of the wine is exposed to oak for a short period of time); lees aging occurs for 4-5months which creates textural interest.  With 9.5% alcohol and 80 calories per glass, this is a nice option when you’re trying to achieve fitness goals.

Vera Vinho Verde, Portugal (Tim)

Perhaps unfamiliar sounding grapes Arinto, Azal, and Loureiro are all estate grown in this Vinho Verde by Vera.  “Vera” translates to “true”, the wines being a reflection of the maritime climate of Northern Portugal and the granite and schist soils of the estate. Low residual sugar and a very light carbonation make this just a bit more serious Vinho Verde. Campania, an area perhaps best known for the beautiful Amalfi coastline, is also home to vineyards growing Aglianico, Negroamaro, Fiano, and Greco di Tufo.  Tufo is the name of a tiny village in the center of the region where tuff-laden volcanic soil is the norm, and this soil type imparts wonderful minerality to this dry white wine. Flavor notes include lime, apple, pear and apricot and make this a delightful summer wine. Pair with traditional Campanian dishes, like clams and garbanzo beans served with grilled bread, or spaghetti with colatura di alici di cetara (a form of marinated anchovy-based condiment), or Italian American fare such as chicken or shrimp-topped Caesar salad.

Banyan 2022 Gewurztraminer, Monterey County, California (Griffin)

HOBO Wine Company has a habit of pumping out some unusual varietals from the varied Sonoma landscape, and this wine is no exception. Gewurztraminer is a grape grown largely in Germany and Alsace, but takes a turn in Monterey County here.  “Banyan” was developed with the sole purpose of making wine to pair with the Southeast Asian cuisine that one of the HOBO founders grew up eating. Just a touch of sweetness at 5.7g/L residual sugar balances the acidity. Savory fruit notes, ginger spice and gorgeous floral aromatics are enchanting and keep you reaching for the glass. Thai food or sushi is a great pairing here, but this will also work well with washed rind cheeses such as Munster.

Jean Claude Thevenet took over the estate in 1971 from this father Raymond, only to pass away at the too-young age of 54. Now his three sons Benjamin, Jonathan, and Aurelien run the estate with their mother Helene.  The grapes for this Chardonnay come from two select parcels in Macon named Margot and Chavigne.  The wine is aged for a period with the lees, lending weight and texture but the wine sees no oak. We enjoyed tasting the line up from Quattro Theory recently, “Quattro” a reference to winemaker Landon Donley’s aim of bringing together four elements: vision, quality vines, precision winemaking, and finally, the experience of enjoying food and wine with friends.  We were particularly charmed by the Sauvignon Blanc, from some of the oldest Sauvignon plantings in Napa Valley in Calistoga. Josh Phelps “Grounded” 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, California (Andres)

Josh Phelps grew up in Napa Valley, the son of famed winemaker Chris Phelps.  Chris Phelps is the founder and winemaker at Ad Vivum, and before that enjoyed stints at Chateau Pètrus in Bordeaux as well as Dominus and Caymus in Napa Valley. Dad is focused on producing $100+ wines, while son has honed in on producing great value wines such as this example. Grapes selected from Central Coast and Northern interior vineyards of California were harvested and transported to the winery in St Helena. Boasting black cherry, blackberry, cocoa and toasty oak notes, this silky smooth red would pair wonderfully with grilled skirt steak or cheeseburgers.

Parducci True Grit 2019 Petite Sirah Reserve, Mendocino, California (Tim)

Petite Sirah originated in France in the 1800s, where it was known as Durif. This hybrid grape was created by crossing Syrah with a relatively unknown varietal Peloursin. Now, it’s primarily grown in California, Washington State and Australia. There’s nothing petite about this bold, muscular red, sporting plum and blueberry notes with touches of vanilla and nutmeg from aging in American and Hungarian oak.  Try with rich meals such as Mongolian glazed short ribs, blue cheese topped burgers, or steak au poivre.

Bastgen Kestener Paulinshofberg 2021 Spatlese Riesling, Mosel, Germany (Aron)

Paulinshofberg is one of the most prized vineyards in Mosel, covering a small 9 hectare footprint, dominated with slate soils that force the vine roots to struggle deeper to seek moisture in times of drought.  These slate soils also impart a minerally stamp on the wine, in addition to the already pleasurable lichi and pineapple tones and crisp, electric acidity. Weingut Bastgen was established in 1850 and is run by husband-wife team Armin Vogel and Mona Bastgen. Bastgen is one of 40 members of the elite Bernkasteler Ring, an indication of the quality of their wines. This is a super value in our opinion, and would offer a wonderful pairing with roasted poultry, pork tenderloin or spicy Pad Thai.

Trefethen Eshcol 2021 Chardonnay, Napa, California (Aron)

While we have long been big fans of Trefethen Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, their “Eshcol” line features more affordable yet still estate-grown wines. The name Eshcol is a nod to the original historic estate, dating back to 1886 with building the winery in the center of Eshcol Ranch. This, their Chardonnay from select plots in Napa shows green apple, lemon, and tangerine notes with a long, lively finish.  The wine spends nine months in mostly used oak, giving it a surprising level of richness at this price point. Enjoy with chicken pot pie, rockfish topped with crab imperial or pecan-crusted baked salmon.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards Mountain White, South Africa (Tim)

A visit this week from the Thelema winemaker delighted us with their lineup. We found this white wine to offer particularly good value, a blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Viognier. Impressively, all of their wines are estate grown, set at the base of a large crater in the lush greenery of the South Easterly side of the Simonsberg Mountain. This crisp, clean, very dry white features bright acidity assisted by some depth and roundness from the Viognier addition.  Passionfruit, apricot and melon aromas are alluring but subtle, making this a great pairing with mild cheeses, oysters, or delicate seafood.

Venta Morales 2022 Tempranillo, Spain (Andres)

La Mancha brings to mind not only the stories of Don Quixote but also delicious tapas and Tempranillo like this example. During the Middle Ages, this was an area where Christian forces met the Moors. The Arabs coined the land “Al-Mansha”, or “dry land”, aptly describing the harsh environmental conditions. This affordable red is delicious and juicy with plump raspberry and plum notes. Pair with Manchego cheese made from the milk of the local Manchega sheep and some Iberica or Serrano ham.

Cheateau Auney L’Hermitages 2018 Graves, Bordeaux (Tim)

We brought this new Bordeaux in after a tasting of a selection of wonderful Rosenthal imported wines. This red showed particularly well. The estate was known as Chateau le Chec until 2012 when the long-time owners changed the name to “Auney l’Hermitage”, a reflection of Sylvie and Christian Auney now running the estate. From a four-hectare parcel of land with vines planted to gravel, clay and sand, this wine is composed of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% each Cabernet Franc and Malbec, aged 15 months in a combination or new and used barrels.   This would be a great pairing with a variety of aged cheeses, or with a special meal of lamb or beef.

Cool climate and coastal fog make the Russian River Valley the ideal region for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which make up 70% of the region’s plantings. Menhir Quota 31 2020, Salento, Italy (Avery)

Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Italy is home to the Salento vineyards where the Primitivo grapes for this wine are grown. The word Primitivo is derived from the Latin “early ripening”, as an Italian monk noticed the grape ripened before the other grapes in his vineyard. If you enjoy California Zinfandels, Primitivo is a great alternative as they are almost genetically identical.  Featuring jammy plum and blackberry fruit notes, this bold wine with chewy tannins would pair wonderfully with braised leg of lamb, smoked meats, or Italian sausage with pasta.
