Domaine de L’Afantiere 2021 Macon-Uchizy, Burgundy, France (Aron)

Our old standby white Burgundy from the village of Uchizy by Raphael Sallette is currently out of stock in distribution, which led us to this wonderful creation, also produced by Raphael Sallette however under the different label of Domaine de L’Afantiere.  This is 100% Chardonnay planted to clay and limestone soils that sees no oak, resulting in a fresh expression exhibiting Asian pear, lime, and mineral notes, excellent to pair with seafood or poultry during the cold winter months .

Portlandia 2021 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Pat)

Portlandia was founded by Damian Davis, who fell in love with Oregon after a cross country trek from Florida. He loved it so much that he decided to change careers from the tech industry to wine! From the Willamette Valley, this dry yet exuberant Pinot Gris shows aromas of Meyer lemon and pear and flavors of apricot and nectarine. Smooth with zippy acidity and rich minerality this crisp, refreshing white wine will pair well with pan seared rockfish with a lemon butter sauce or crab cakes with garlic aioli.

Dandelion is an old friend returned to the shelves of Mills, after a lengthy absence due to worldwide popularity.  Developed by former Madrid economist Alberto Nanclares turned Riax Baixas “Garagista” winemaker, this vintage is as good as ever. Showing passionfruit, grapefruit and stone fruit notes with lovely minerality plus a pleasingly round texture and not-over-arching acidity make this a wonderful Albariño to pair with food; try with pan seared scallops or shrimp tacos with bright pineapple salsa.

Domaine la Manarine is a Rosenthal imported Rhone producer headed up by the talented Gilles Gasq since 2001. Located on a plateau in the southern Rhone commune of Travaillan, most of the vineyards are situated on the well-known “Plan de Dieu”, an area recognized for soil composed of hard limestone quartz “galets”, or large, smooth temperature moderating pebbles. Somewhat unusually, this Cotes du Rhone is made from 100% Grenache aged in stainless steel tanks for 24 months.  Spicy and full-bodied, this red has the garrigue notes typical of the region, making it the perfect pairing with roast chicken with Mediterranean herbs or pork chops with pancetta stuffing.

Lelievre “Leucquois” NV Brut Blanc de Noir, France (Aron)

In the Northeast France region of Lorraine lies the Cotes de Toul appellation, where vines were originally planted by the Romans centuries ago. This is where brothers Vincent and David Lelièvre farm Pinot Noir, Auxerrois and Gamay planted to clay-limestone hillsides.   This example of their work is a Champagne-Methode Blanc de Noir made from Gamay. Exhibiting crisp notes of raspberry and pit fruit, good acidity and yeasty, earthy undertones, this is an ideal aperitif or celebratory toast!

Domaine du Possible Cours Toujours, Roussillon, France (Pat)

You can place firmly in the unusual category this dry white wine from Southern France by Loic Roure, a winemaker with a sense of humor. The estate name “Domaine du Possible” is a double entendre: doing things to the best of one’s ability, but also meaning “anything’s possible”. This blend of 70% Macabeo and 30% Carignan Gris from schist and granite soils shows star fruit, quince, apple and quartz notes with good acidity and a long, almost saline finish. Try with sole or cod baked “en Papillote”, Mediterranean white bean soup, or a hearty winter salad featuring cranberries, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette.

Gracetown 2020 Chardonnay, Margaret River, Australia (David)

An incredible value, this Chardonnay hails from Margaret River, a region marked by red gravel loam soils and strong maritime climate influence. A short four months in mostly used French oak provides roundness and complexity while partial malolactic fermentation lends some soft creamy texture. Notes of apple butter, nectarine, toasty almond and wet stone are pleasing. Pair with a creamy garlic chicken with pasta, corn chowder or cream of crab soup, or seared scallops with a butter sauce and roasted root vegetables.

Center of Effort “Effort” 2020 Chardonnay, Edna Valley, California (Tim)

Some might recognize the label from their Pinot Noir we previously featured (now finally back in stock!). This white wine matches their Pinot Noir in quality and elegance. All estate grown, this is fermented in French oak, concrete and Acacia, undergoes complete malolactic fermentation, then ages on the lees for 11 months, providing for a rich expression of Chardonnay countered with balanced acidity.  Floral aromas and tropical fruit notes make this an ideal pairing with Thai pork lettuce wraps, sushi, or green curry soup.

Alentejo is the largest wine region of Portugal, located in the hot, sunny southeast. In addition to wine and olive oil, Alentejo is responsible for half of the World’s production of cork.  Talented Antonio Macanita is at the helm of this estate, where he farms organically without irrigation, employing native yeasts, indigenous varietals, and harvesting by hand at night.  This lush example of his work is made from 50% Aragonez (Tempranillo), 30% Touriga Nacional, and 20% Alicante Bouschet planted to rocky schist soils. Aged in stainless steel and conditioned French oak for 10 months, it displays violets, raspberries, blackcurrants with lilting notes of toast and spice.  Enjoy with beef empanadas, standing rib roast with fingerling potatoes, or slow roasted lamb stew.

Anne Amie 2021 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

Anne Amie’s vineyards, located in the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton district and the steep hillsides of the Chehalem Mountains, are some of the best sites Oregon has to offer. Here they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and even some Muller-Thurgau that was planted in 1979! This Winemaker’s Selection Pinot Noir offers up lots of exuberant fruit notes, including dark cherry and raspberry with soft, supple tannins.  Aged 10 months in mostly neutral oak, this Pinot Noir can pair nicely with beef tenderloin, beef bourguignon, or herb roasted Cornish game hens. Colonia Las Liebres 2020 Bonarda Clasica, Argentina (Tim)

Bonarda grapes for this wine come from the Lujan de Cuyo portion of Mendoza, an area with desert-hot days and cool nights and soils of well-draining sandy loam.  Fermented in stainless steel and aged in concrete, this wine sees no oak, preserving freshness and allowing pretty fruit notes to shine through.  Those red fruit notes are accompanied by characteristic white pepper, making for a deep, vibrant, flavorful wine ideal to pair with pepperoni flatbread pizza, classic spaghetti and meatballs, or Choripan, the classic Argentinian street food chorizo sausage sandwiches.

Casa Castillo 2019 Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain (Jen & Jerry)

We thought this big, bold, fruit-driven red would be a solid addition to any wine lover’s winter lineup!  Made from 80% Monastrell and 20% Garnacha, this is aged in large French oak for 9 months.  Monastrell is also known as Mourvedre where it’s grown in the Rhone Valley of France, providing the velvety texture component as the “M” in “GSM” (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre blends).  Not overly tannic, this smooth, almost jammy red can be enjoyed by itself or with glazed meatloaf, tangy baked chicken wings, or Mongolian meatballs.  Rated 91pts by the Wine Advocate!

Fenouillet Vaucluse Vin de Pays, France (Aron)

Rosenthal imported Domaine de Fenouillet is located in the village of Beaumes de Venise, an area many of you may associate with the traditional dessert wine from the same appellation.  This wine, however, is a blend of Marselan (a cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache) and Merlot. This wine sees no oak, making a fresh expression redolent of red fruit and “sous-bois”, or damp earth/forest floor. Enjoy this classic French country table wine with and in coq au vin, or a simple pan sauteed Steak Diane.

Quinta da Cabriz Dao White, Portugal (Aron)

People are loving Portuguese reds but the white wines are worth a taste and similarly provide good value. Poseidon 2020 Estate Chardonnay, Carneros, California (Pat)

This rich, medium-full bodied Chardonnay displays notes of hazelnut, pastry, apricot and orchard fruit, with a pleasing creamy texture and classic California spiced oak note from 16 months in Hungarian barrels of varying age (Co-founder Peter Molnar has ownership in a Hungarian cooperage where they source their barrels).  The Poseidon Vineyard, located at the corner where the Napa River and Carneros Creek meet, was planted in 1973 by the Molnar Family.  The Carneros maritime climate delivers the cool, foggy mornings and warm days that are perfect growing conditions for slow-ripening, high quality Chardonnay.  Try with oven-baked salmon, cream of crab or butternut squash soup, or a garlic butter roasted chicken with potatoes.

Signature Marlborough guava, passionfruit and lime notes shine through on this zippy and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes for this wine were from vines grown in an ancient riverbed comprised of silty loam soil. From Marsala in the western part of Sicily, this delightful white wine made from the Grillo grape shows a bevy of citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruit notes with a long, minerally finish and great acidity. The Vesco family farms their high hillside vineyards organically, taking advantage of the slightly cooler temperatures and greater diurnal temperature changes.  This wine would be delightful alongside pasta with pesto sauce, calamari, or a hot bowl of tortellini soup.

While nothing quite beats the value of our $10 Picpoul from Southern France, we thought this California version was a delicious take on the grape.  “Pique-poule”, which roughly translates to “lip-stinger”, is a fixture on Southern France tables; lip smacking acidity and a round texture are hallmarks of the wine that appeals to a wide variety of palates.  Enjoy as an aperitif, or pair with vegetable lasagna or oven baked prawns.

Chateau Fontanès 2020 “Les Traverses” Pays d’Oc, France (Tim)

A kind of unusual concept, this Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, a region more known for the production of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah.  In fact, the grapes for this bottling all come from the Pic St Loup appellation, but since Cabernet Sauvignon is not one of the permitted varietals grown in the appellation, it wears the table wine label of “Vin de Pays”.  Nonetheless delicious, this is showing plump, juicy blackcurrant, ripe berry and bramble notes, with very little tannins, making it great to pair with simple appetizers or cheese and charcuterie.

Correggia Roero, Italy (Jen & Jerry)

Matteo Correggia contributed significantly to the establishment of Roero as a recognized DOCG before tragically passing in a tractor accident in 2001. Other Roero producers came together to help the family finish the harvest that year, and his wife Ornella and now grown children Giovanni and Briggita still run the estate today.  Located just North of Alba in the Piemonte region, Roero is sometimes overlooked for it’s more famous Barolo and Barbaresco brethren, however, is capable of producing beautiful Nebbiolo such as this example at a fraction of the price. Aged six months in barrel, this shows violet aromatics, intense red cherry fruit notes, brisk acidity and good tannins, wonderful for pairing with slow cooked beef short ribs, pasta carbonara or a delicious platter of salumi & formaggi.

Envinate 2021 Albahra, Spain (Aron)

“Envinate” translates to “wine yourself”, the brainchild of four friends who studied wine together at University in Alicante.  They apply old-fashioned farming and wine making methods to exceptional single parcels in Ribeira Sacra, the Canary Islands, and through the Iberian Peninsula, making what some consider to be the most exciting new wines in Spain today. This blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera and the 30% the rare Moravia Agria is grown in Almansa, at the Southeastern tip of Castilla-la Mancha and sees no oak. Bursting with notes of fresh wild berries and herbs with dusty tannins and fresh acidity this would pair well with paella, or arroz con pollo.

Julien Schaal 2020 Riesling “Rosacker Calcaire” Grand Cru, Alsace, France (Pat)

This dry, terroir driven Riesling is from a limestone dominated site just north of Hunawihr, a small village between Ribeauville and Riquewihr in the picturesque Alsace region of France. The Rosacker Vineyard dates back to 1483 and is one of Alsace’s most esteemed Grand Cru vineyards, named Rosacker for the abundant wild roses growing around the edges of the property. With just a hint of petrol aromas this elegant, beautifully textured wine has an underlying powerful mineral core.  This wine will pair well with a variety of cheeses, a creamy goat cheese or medium-bodied Gruyere or cheddar, or could also be a great pairing with a deliciously salty ham and scalloped potatoes.

From the Hawke’s Bay appellation on the East Coast of Aoteroa of New Zealand, this Sauvignon Blanc shows bold notes of grapefruit, mineral and passionfruit; an exuberant wine with plenty of bright acidity, designed to pair wonderfully with grilled or sauteed fish or raw oysters. Domaine Corne Loupe 2022 Rosè, Tavel, France (Jen & Jerry)

Tavel is the only village dedicated exclusively to the production of Rosè…it’s no wonder they’ve mastered the concept!  Domaine Corne Loupe’s version provides exceptional value. Sadly, every year it sells out midsummer. Comprised of 60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre, Clairette and Carignan planted to white stone and “galets roules” pebbled soils, it gets its dark pink hue from contact with the grape skins during the fermentation process.  Medium-bodied, this rosè is very dry with notes of cassis, persimmon, strawberry and blackcurrant, presenting an almost savory characteristic that lends very well to food pairing.

Lemelson 2021 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

Eric Lemelson first planted vines in Willamette Valley in 1995, and they’re still making great Willamette Valley Pinot Noir! They typically create a “Thea’s Selection” Pinot Noir, but yields were not high enough this vintage so all of their fruit went to the production of their straight Willamette Valley Pinot Noir-the quality therefore is elevated. From Dundee Hills and Yamhill Carlton AVAs, the wine is aged 8 months in 11% new French oak, providing an intense yet elegant expression of Pinot Noir; this would nicely accompany a smoked ham, or grilled salmon or beef tenderloin.

Bresolin Bio Prosecco “Benny” Extra Brut, Italy (Aron)

This bubbly is a drier version of Prosecco made from the Glera grape in the Veneto region of Italy.  Made by three Bresolin brothers, they named this wine “Benny” for their father Beniamino, who imbued in them a love and respect of not only the land they farm but also the woods close to the vineyards filled with roe deer, wild boar and birds. This respect is why they chose to farm organically in the hills of Asolo.  This is bright, energetic and refreshing with notes of fresh crunchy green apple, zippy grapefruit and tangy pineapple yet finishes dry on the palate. This would be lovely paired with grilled fish, cheese and salumi, or as a celebratory aperitif. Saluti!

Josef Bauer 2021 Riesling Feuersbrunn, Niederosterreich, Austria (Pat)

Josef and Christine Bauer and their children are the fourth and fifth generation of the family managing this small ten-hectare estate just northeast of Vienna, an area replete with “loess” soils.  Loess is a German term meaning “loose”, referring to the easily crumbling soil that’s filled with minerals and easy to drain, making it ideal for wine cultivation. Here the Bauer family grows primarily Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, practicing organic farming. This dry (less than 7 g/L sugar) Riesling features generous aromas and flavors of ripe pears, white peaches, and zippy lemon zest which follow through to a fresh, juicy finish with lots of acidity and a touch of white pepper. This wine will elevate sushi or fish or chicken dishes with spicy elements.

Casa d’Ambra 2021 Forastera, Campania, Italy (Tim)

The unique volcanic isle of Ischia lies in the Tyrhennian Sea off the southwest coast of Italy as part of the Campania wine region.  Ischia is a quirky fishermen’s domain that was recently featured on Stanley Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” program. Food and wine are of course an integral part of the local culture! This dry white wine is made from the Forastera grape which thrives on the island. Vibrant and boldly textured, this wine delights with fresh notes of apricot, pear, almond, and hint of Mediterranean scrub. Rabbit stew is a staple on the island, but this wine will better pair with our local freshly prepared seafood alongside tomatoes, artichokes, and broccoli as is typical in Ischia.

“Rubus” translates to “raspberry” in Latin; it’s a name given to the genus of flowering plants in the rose family. Domaine Lèon Boesch 2020 “Les Jardins”, Alsace, France (Andres)

On the heels of a long line of winemakers dating back to 1640, Matthieu and Marie Boesch are the 11th generation in charge of the Domaine. Most of their production is focused on white wine, but this red comes from a small plot of Pinot Noir vines planted to limestone soils. The vines are farmed biodynamically and organically, and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels. Upon sampling this wine, we were indeed transported by the freshly picked ripe raspberry aromas to “les jardins”; bright cherry fruit notes and light damp earth tones confirmed the garden vibe. This would be a beautiful pairing with salmon, a charcuterie platter, or as suggested by the Boesch family, with “Boudin a la pomme”, a traditional French dish featuring blood sausage and apples.

From Calabria, Italy’s “toe of the boot”, this is a lighter weight red made from the relatively obscure Gaglioppo grape, known to be an offspring of Sangiovese. The town of Cirò is located on the Ionian Sea’s central coast, a hub of wine production for at least 3000 years. In fact, wine from Cirò was offered to victors of the ancient Olympics! Manousakis Nostos 2021 Romeiko, Crete, Greece (Tim)

Ted Manousakis established the winery in 1993, returning to the verdant island of Crete he left at age 11. “Nostos” refers to a “yearning to come home”, a concept based in Greek literature going back to the Odyssey. Now Ted and his daughter Alexandra run the estate, organically producing a variety of traditional Greek wines, Rhone varietals and some lesser-known ancient indigenous varietals like Romeiko.  This dry, medium-bodied white shows gooseberry and citrus aromas and flavors with a touch of grassiness. While the largest Rosè producers are clustered in Cotes de Provence, the growers in Aix-en-Provence enjoy cool nights in the rugged, higher elevation vineyards. In fact, harvest here takes place on average two weeks later than Cotes de Provence, allowing for gentler ripening and more natural acidity. This wine is named for the winemaker’s daughter Sabine who was born in 2005, coinciding with the inaugural vintage of this delicious dry Rosè. This particular example is made from nearly equal amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot.  Resplendent with notes of blackberry, slate and earthy sage with a very dry finish, this is a good match for grilled pork chops or lamb skewers.

Vera Vinho Verde, Portugal (Tim)

Perhaps unfamiliar sounding grapes Arinto, Azal, and Loureiro are all estate grown in this Vinho Verde by Vera.  “Vera” translates to “true”, the wines being a reflection of the maritime climate of Northern Portugal and the granite and schist soils of the estate. Low residual sugar and a very light carbonation make this just a bit more serious Vinho Verde. Showing grapefruit, lime, mineral with bright acidity and slight effervescence, this is a wonderful aperitif or summer sipper.

Claudio Quarta 2021 Greco di Tufo, Campania, Italy (Aron)

Campania, an area perhaps best known for the beautiful Amalfi coastline, is also home to vineyards growing Aglianico, Negroamaro, Fiano, and Greco di Tufo.  Tufo is the name of a tiny village in the center of the region where tuff-laden volcanic soil is the norm, and this soil type imparts wonderful minerality to this dry white wine. Flavor notes include lime, apple, pear and apricot and make this a delightful summer wine. Pair with traditional Campanian dishes, like clams and garbanzo beans served with grilled bread, or spaghetti with colatura di alici di cetara (a form of marinated anchovy-based condiment), or Italian American fare such as chicken or shrimp-topped Caesar salad.

Banyan 2022 Gewurztraminer, Monterey County, California (Griffin)

HOBO Wine Company has a habit of pumping out some unusual varietals from the varied Sonoma landscape, and this wine is no exception. Gewurztraminer is a grape grown largely in Germany and Alsace, but takes a turn in Monterey County here.  “Banyan” was developed with the sole purpose of making wine to pair with the Southeast Asian cuisine that one of the HOBO founders grew up eating. Just a touch of sweetness at 5.7g/L residual sugar balances the acidity. Savory fruit notes, ginger spice and gorgeous floral aromatics are enchanting and keep you reaching for the glass. Thai food or sushi is a great pairing here, but this will also work well with washed rind cheeses such as Munster.

Galicia is an area known for an amazing variety and abundance of seafood.  From scallops to crabs, oysters to octopus, the food lends itself to simple pan or grill preparations with a squeeze of juicy citrus, perfect to pair with a white wine like Albariño! This version boasts melon and honey aromas with flavors of nectarine and salty melon, all accompanied by mild acidity.

Thevenet 2021 Macon PierreClos, Burgundy France (Jen & Jerry)

Jean Claude Thevenet took over the estate in 1971 from this father Raymond, only to pass away at the too-young age of 54. Now his three sons Benjamin, Jonathan, and Aurelien run the estate with their mother Helene.  The grapes for this Chardonnay come from two select parcels in Macon named Margot and Chavigne.  The wine is aged for a period with the lees, lending weight and texture but the wine sees no oak. The result is a fresh Chardonnay showing bright notes of green apple, ripe pear, thyme and wet stone. Enjoy with local crab cakes or rockfish.

Folk Machine Rosè, Arroyo Seco, California (Griffin)

Folk Machine was established in 2012 as the “Pinot Noir” arm of the HOBO Wine Company, but has since expanded to include an esoteric assortment of grapes, from Charbono to Grenache to Valdeguie.  This light, fresh, almost savory example of their work is made from the Gamay grape. Pale pink from a minimal amount of skin contact time, this features bright cherry notes and minerality. Committed to sustainability, Folk Machine uses recycled bottling material (thus the greenish hue of the bottle). Try this dry and elegant Rosè with pizza or light grilled fare.

The Smugglers Boot 2021 Pinot Noir, Cape South Coast, South Africa (Pat)

The name “Smugglers Boot” refers to the practice of winemakers hiding cuttings in Wellington boots to transport into the country during the South African trade embargo. We found this to be Burgundian in style, made entirely of French clones and with minimal oak treatment; showing savory red fruit, pomegranate and earth notes, fresh acidity and a long supple finish.  Enjoy with grilled salmon, pork tenderloin or seared tuna steaks.

Grochau Cellars “Convivial” Red, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

John Grochau worked for Erath and Brick House Wines before starting his own gig at Grochau Cellars in 2002.  This blend of Pinot Noir and Gamey, similar to Burgundy’s Passetoutgrain concept, is bursting with pretty ripe fruit. Light-bodied and not tannic, this would be an excellent red to enjoy alongside a cheese and charcuterie platter, or with a slight chill on a picnic dinner.

Cesari 2020 Justo Rosso, Veneto, Italy (Jen & Jerry)

Cesari was established in 1936 with the aim of becoming a world-class Amarone producer; their wines are now proudly exported throughout the World. This wine is an example of one of their delicious and much more affordable table wines. Made from a combination of Corvina and Merlot, this wine is an “appassimento” style, meaning the grapes are dried for about 20 days (the “just right”, or “justo” amount of time) before fermentation. This wine is loaded with ripe cherry fruit notes and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel…try with aged cheeses or grilled beef or venison.

We thoroughly enjoyed trying this new Merlot from Alain de la Treille, a value brand from the Loire Valley of which we’ve also enjoyed their Sauvignon Blanc, Vouvray, and Pinot Noir.  Medium-bodied and showing cherry, plum and black pepper notes, this Merlot is the perfect weeknight wine and would pair nicely with grilled beef or lamb.

Famille Perrin 2020 “Nature” Cotes du Rhone, France (Andres)

From Famille Perrin, the same family responsible for the famed Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this red comprised of Grenache and Syrah is a wonderful example of their style. Pioneers in organic farming, the Perrin family brought Chateau Beaucastel through the organic certification process over 40 years ago, and this wine is also certified Organic by Ecocert.  Expressive with aromatics of violets and strawberries, the palate shows black fruits, pepper and Mediterranean herbs, finishing silky and long. Enjoy with grilled chicken or pork.

Twenty Rows 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California (Tim)

Even in the summertime, the occasion sometimes calls for a classically styled Napa red wine.  A special celebratory meal featuring grilled steaks or lamb chops would benefit from the rich structure of this Cabernet Sauvignon. Quattro Theory 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa, California (Tim)

We enjoyed tasting the line up from Quattro Theory recently, “Quattro” a reference to winemaker Landon Donley’s aim of bringing together four elements: vision, quality vines, precision winemaking, and finally, the experience of enjoying food and wine with friends.  We were particularly charmed by the Sauvignon Blanc, from some of the oldest Sauvignon plantings in Napa Valley in Calistoga. A small amount of Semillon adds a bit of roundness to the wine. Aromas of vanilla and vibrant stone and citrus fruit notes and fresh acidity make this a wonderful pairing with fresh oysters, lemon-herb roasted chicken, or salad topped with goat cheese.

Les Gentilhommes 2022 Macon-Peronne, France (Pat)

“Les Gentilhommes”, translating to “the gentlemen”, in this case refers to brothers Richard and Stephane Martin who make this Chardonnay in the village of Peronne in Burgundy.  A small 15% of the wine was aged in oak for 9months, while the remainder aged on the lees in stainless steel tanks. The wine is fresh with notes of peach and apple accented by fresh acidity and mineral tones. This is a no-brainer pairing with roast chicken, salmon, or certainly anything with crab!

Damien Martin was established in 1975, a 2.5 hectare estate with limestone rich soils in the village of Davaye. It’s now grown to 20 hectares, focusing on the production of Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir. Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Verduno Pelaverga, Piedmont, Italy (Pat)

Pelaverga Piccolo is the name of the grape, a varietal unique to the commune of Verduno in Piedmont. Fratelli Alessandria could make a good deal more money dedicating this vineyard space to Barolo production but this wine holds a special place in the hearts of the family.  Known for beautiful aromatics, this wine gives off layers of rhubarb, wet earth, and rosebud scents.  Enjoy this lovely light to medium-bodied, velvety-textured red with good acidity with pizza, pasta dishes with tomato sauce, or roasted poultry.

Aged in French and American oak for 4 months, this bold red shows dark fruit notes, mineral and earth tones, and smooth tannins culminating in a long, pleasing finish. This would be a great pairing for grilled flank steak and peppers, or estofados, a slow-simmering Spanish beef stew.

Fall is the perfect time to experiment with Bordeaux, this example comprised largely of Merlot and Petit Verdot from the highly esteemed (and tiny!) Pomerol appellation and the great vintage of 2018. This relatively affordable Pomerol is the second wine of the estate Chateau Mazeyres, boasting black fruit and licorice notes and tannins that require a delicious plate of lamb chops or charcuterie and cheese. This wine shows best when decanted or given the chance to air in the glass, and at the proper temperature of 60 degrees-pop in the frig for 20 minutes before opening.

Josh Phelps “Grounded” 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, California (Andres)

Josh Phelps grew up in Napa Valley, the son of famed winemaker Chris Phelps.  Chris Phelps is the founder and winemaker at Ad Vivum, and before that enjoyed stints at Chateau Pètrus in Bordeaux as well as Dominus and Caymus in Napa Valley. Dad is focused on producing $100+ wines, while son has honed in on producing great value wines such as this example. Grapes selected from Central Coast and Northern interior vineyards of California were harvested and transported to the winery in St Helena. Petite Sirah originated in France in the 1800s, where it was known as Durif. This hybrid grape was created by crossing Syrah with a relatively unknown varietal Peloursin. Now, it’s primarily grown in California, Washington State and Australia. There’s nothing petite about this bold, muscular red, sporting plum and blueberry notes with touches of vanilla and nutmeg from aging in American and Hungarian oak.  Try with rich meals such as Mongolian glazed short ribs, blue cheese topped burgers, or steak au poivre.
