Stein 2021 Rosè Secco, Germany (Aron)

Although not well-known in the United States, Dr. Ulrich Stein enjoys a fanatical following in Europe, his wines a regular feature on Copenhagen’s iconic Noma’s menu. Made from Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot planted to steep, slate hillsides in the Mosel region of Germany this Charmat method sparkling wine is light, decidedly dry and not overly fruity. Mineral notes and zippy acidity make this a versatile pairing with oysters, fried chicken, or as a sophisticated aperitif. This was a wine we preordered months ago…so quantities are limited!

Chodin Param “Parra Libre” 2020 Cinsault, Itata and Bio Bio Valley, Chile (Jen & Jerry)

There’s much more to Chilean wine than inexpensive Carmeñere and Cabernet Sauvignon. Take for example this 100% Cinsault from an organically dry-farmed 100 year old vineyard in the area of Coelemu near the Pacific Ocean. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts, bottled unfined and unfiltered (some sediment in the bottom of the bottle is normal!).  Showing bright red fruit notes and relatively low tannins, we thought this could be the perfect summer wine to pair with grilled chicken or pork tenderloin.

Raventos i Blanc 2018 De la Finca, Conca del Riu Anoia, Spain (Aron)

Skyrocketing Champagne prices have us searching for options in high quality sparkling wine. A visit from Pepe Raventos, fourteenth (not a misprint) generation winemaker from Raventos I Blanc in the Penedes provided just the solution. We thoroughly enjoyed his entry level offerings but were downright enthralled by this wine: De la Finca, a gorgeous Sparkling from vines planted in 1964 to a vineyard with highly fossilized marine soils. Aged for 30 months with the lees, it shows bold, yeasty notes with tiny fine bubbles and Mediterranean notes of fennel, underbrush and saline. Serve as aperitif for a very special occasion, or paired with a variety of appetizers, from oysters to Albòndigas (Spanish pork and chorizo meatballs). Certified organic, and the vineyards are certified Biodynamic although the wine is not officially certified Biodynamic. Salud!

Menicucci Ginesia 2021 Pecorino, Abruzzo, Italy (Pat)

“Pecora” translates to “sheep” in Italian, the prominence of which explains the much more well-known Pecorino cheese. However, Pecorino is also a beautiful white wine of the Abruzzo region of Italy, made from a small, pale grape of low yielding and annoyingly fickle vines; it requires a patient and dedicated farmer! Dry with notes of pear and almond, it’s nicely structured and wonderful to pair with seafood, mushroom risotto, or roasted turkey or chicken.

With the Thanksgiving table on the horizon, a dry or semi-dry Riesling is an excellent match for fried or smoked turkey, as well as matching difficult sides like sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.  This Kabinett Riesling is at once delicate, mineral, a little less sweet, and more acid-driven than your typical Kabinett, explaining the “Elektrisch” moniker.  Think Granny Smith apple, bright citrus and a number two pencil to boot. Spicy food, shellfish, and those turkey day staples are embraced by this modern German white wine.

Domaine Faillenc Sainte Marie 2020 Corbieres, France (Andrew)

Faillenc Sainte Marie is a tiny property of 8 hectares, perched precariously on the rocky foothills of Mont Alaric, where it’s exposed to harsh weather conditions.  Dominique and Marie Therese Gilbert have handed over the Domaine to son Jean-Baptiste Gilbert, who is expanding production and transitioning to completely organic production.  Dominique, still a practicing architect, designs the attractive labels for the wines while Marie Therese carefully tends the low-yielding vines in the field.  This example of their work is a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, cofermented before sitting in tank (no oak) prior to bottling.  Sporting wild berry notes, good acidity and rustic tannins, this will pair wonderfully with a hearty beef stew, chili, or the traditional Languedoc meal of Cassoulet.

Luigi Oddero 2017 “Convento” Barolo, Piedmont, Italy (Andrew)

We were deeply impressed by this new Barolo, made from Nebbiolo grapes from the Oddero family vineyards in La Morra, Castiglione Falleto, and Serralunga d’Alba villages of Barolo. Aged in large oak botti for 24 months, it offers up aromas of plum, tar, earth, menthol, and spice. The full-bodied palate has good acidity, fine tannins and a long finish and in spite of its relative youth is drinking beautifully now! A 30-60 minute decant is recommended, if time allows…pair with roasted beef or game.

Portlandia 2021 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Pat)

Portlandia was founded by Damian Davis, who fell in love with Oregon after a cross country trek from Florida. He loved it so much that he decided to change careers from the tech industry to wine! From the Willamette Valley, this dry yet exuberant Pinot Gris shows aromas of Meyer lemon and pear and flavors of apricot and nectarine. Smooth with zippy acidity and rich minerality this crisp, refreshing white wine will pair well with pan seared rockfish with a lemon butter sauce or crab cakes with garlic aioli.

This blend of 70% Macabeo and 30% Carignan Gris from schist and granite soils shows star fruit, quince, apple and quartz notes with good acidity and a long, almost saline finish. An incredible value, this Chardonnay hails from Margaret River, a region marked by red gravel loam soils and strong maritime climate influence. A kind of unusual concept, this Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, a region more known for the production of Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah.  In fact, the grapes for this bottling all come from the Pic St Loup appellation, but since Cabernet Sauvignon is not one of the permitted varietals grown in the appellation, it wears the table wine label of “Vin de Pays”.  Nonetheless delicious, this is showing plump, juicy blackcurrant, ripe berry and bramble notes, with very little tannins, making it great to pair with simple appetizers or cheese and charcuterie.

Other Roero producers came together to help the family finish the harvest that year, and his wife Ornella and now grown children Giovanni and Briggita still run the estate today.  Located just North of Alba in the Piemonte region, Roero is sometimes overlooked for it’s more famous Barolo and Barbaresco brethren, however, is capable of producing beautiful Nebbiolo such as this example at a fraction of the price. This blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera and the 30% the rare Moravia Agria is grown in Almansa, at the Southeastern tip of Castilla-la Mancha and sees no oak. Domaine Corne Loupe 2022 Rosè, Tavel, France (Jen & Jerry)

Tavel is the only village dedicated exclusively to the production of Rosè…it’s no wonder they’ve mastered the concept!  Domaine Corne Loupe’s version provides exceptional value. Sadly, every year it sells out midsummer. Comprised of 60% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre, Clairette and Carignan planted to white stone and “galets roules” pebbled soils, it gets its dark pink hue from contact with the grape skins during the fermentation process.  Medium-bodied, this rosè is very dry with notes of cassis, persimmon, strawberry and blackcurrant, presenting an almost savory characteristic that lends very well to food pairing.

Lemelson 2021 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Andres)

Eric Lemelson first planted vines in Willamette Valley in 1995, and they’re still making great Willamette Valley Pinot Noir! They typically create a “Thea’s Selection” Pinot Noir, but yields were not high enough this vintage so all of their fruit went to the production of their straight Willamette Valley Pinot Noir-the quality therefore is elevated. From Dundee Hills and Yamhill Carlton AVAs, the wine is aged 8 months in 11% new French oak, providing an intense yet elegant expression of Pinot Noir; this would nicely accompany a smoked ham, or grilled salmon or beef tenderloin.

Chateau Haut-Grelot 2019 Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux, France (Andres)

Even though Chateau Haut-Grelot was established in 1920, the team currently at the helm are the young, energetic Cèline and Julien Bonneau who were recently awarded “Best Young Talent” in Bordeaux.  This blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon comes specifically from Blaye-Cotes de Bordeaux, a district just across the Gironde River from the Mèdoc. Medium-bodied with rich plum fruit notes balanced by very subtle savory earth tones, this red has moderate oak treatment, making this an ideal pairing for beef or lamb!

Tinto Negro 2020 Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (Tim)

Tinto Negro was started by the former Wine Director and one of his colleagues at the well-reputed Catena Zapata. Upon tasting we decided their entry level Malbec offered exceptional value for the price and snapped up some cases for our $10 wine racks.  Unoaked, this is medium-bodied, displaying pretty, fresh plum and blackberry fruit notes. Enjoy with beef tacos, burgers, or chili- a perfect weeknight wine!

William Clark 2019 Syrah, Columbia Valley, Washington (Aron)

This Syrah comes from the Southeast, slightly cooler corner of Horse Heaven Hills appellation of Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Showing blackberry, cherry and violet notes with just a hint of pepper, we really enjoyed the silky smooth texture!  “William Clark” pays homage to The Lewis & Clark Expedition (1804-1806) which crossed into Washington State and traveled down the rapid-laden Columbia River! Enjoy with pepper crusted steak or spicy tacos!

Bresolin Bio Prosecco “Benny” Extra Brut, Italy (Aron)

This bubbly is a drier version of Prosecco made from the Glera grape in the Veneto region of Italy.  Made by three Bresolin brothers, they named this wine “Benny” for their father Beniamino, who imbued in them a love and respect of not only the land they farm but also the woods close to the vineyards filled with roe deer, wild boar and birds. This respect is why they chose to farm organically in the hills of Asolo.  This is bright, energetic and refreshing with notes of fresh crunchy green apple, zippy grapefruit and tangy pineapple yet finishes dry on the palate. This would be lovely paired with grilled fish, cheese and salumi, or as a celebratory aperitif. Saluti!

Josef Bauer 2021 Riesling Feuersbrunn, Niederosterreich, Austria (Pat)

Josef and Christine Bauer and their children are the fourth and fifth generation of the family managing this small ten-hectare estate just northeast of Vienna, an area replete with “loess” soils.  Loess is a German term meaning “loose”, referring to the easily crumbling soil that’s filled with minerals and easy to drain, making it ideal for wine cultivation. Here the Bauer family grows primarily Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, practicing organic farming. This dry (less than 7 g/L sugar) Riesling features generous aromas and flavors of ripe pears, white peaches, and zippy lemon zest which follow through to a fresh, juicy finish with lots of acidity and a touch of white pepper. This wine will elevate sushi or fish or chicken dishes with spicy elements.

Elton Bay 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Coastal Region, South Africa (David)

Elton Bay wines are a nod to the beautiful, ruggedly mountainous South African coastline, largely undeveloped. Lime blossom, passion fruit, green mango and white pepper aromatics and a lightly minerally palate with brisk acidity are satisfying in this simple South African white wine. We enjoy this great value wine with fish tacos or Greek salad, or on the grill with prawns or squid.

Casa d’Ambra 2021 Forastera, Campania, Italy (Tim)

The unique volcanic isle of Ischia lies in the Tyrhennian Sea off the southwest coast of Italy as part of the Campania wine region.  Ischia is a quirky fishermen’s domain that was recently featured on Stanley Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” program. Food and wine are of course an integral part of the local culture! This dry white wine is made from the Forastera grape which thrives on the island. Vibrant and boldly textured, this wine delights with fresh notes of apricot, pear, almond, and hint of Mediterranean scrub. Rabbit stew is a staple on the island, but this wine will better pair with our local freshly prepared seafood alongside tomatoes, artichokes, and broccoli as is typical in Ischia.

Chronos 2021 Pinot Gris, Okanagan Valley, Canada (Jen & Jerry)

A far cry from the simple yet enjoyable Pinot Grigio table wines, this rich and elegant Pinot Gris serves up layers of flavor notes and textural components.  This is our first wine from the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in Canada, an area compared to France and Germany in viticultural capability with rich silt, sand and gravel over 10,000 year old glacial deposits. Featuring Granny Smith apple and stony minerality followed by layers of citrus, melon, peach and lemon notes, the finish is very long in the mouth. Enjoy this wine with a special meal of grilled salmon, raw oysters, steamed mussels, or chicken piccata.

Rubus 2021 Private Selection Rueda, Spain (Andres)

“Rubus” translates to “raspberry” in Latin; it’s a name given to the genus of flowering plants in the rose family. But to us, it stands for great value wines created by and imported by importer/distributor Kysela Pere et Fils. This example of the brand is a 100% Verdejo from the Rueda region of Northern Spain. Featuring a round texture and bright citrus, apricot and jasmine notes, this would be a great pairing with bacon wrapped scallops, mussels, or clams. Dave McIntyre of the Washington Post declared this wine 2.5 stars and a “great value” at $15 recommended retail!

CVNE Cune 2021 Rosado, Spain (David)

CVNE (Compañia Vinicola del Norte de España) was established by two brothers in 1879 and has grown to become a very large company with wineries throughout Rioja representing different quality levels and terroir. Their Cune line of wines represent great value for the price, and are still made in the original winery located near the train station in Haro. Pioneers in technological advances, Cune was the first Spanish winery to adopt gravity-led processes, increasing their sustainability. Made from Tempranillo grapes in the Rioja region of Spain, this dry Rosè is a dark pink hue, showing notes of strawberry, hibiscus and tart cranberry notes.  Medium-bodied, this can pair perfectly with grilled chicken, pork chops or pizza with spicy pepperoni.

Domaine Lèon Boesch 2020 “Les Jardins”, Alsace, France (Andres)

On the heels of a long line of winemakers dating back to 1640, Matthieu and Marie Boesch are the 11th generation in charge of the Domaine. Most of their production is focused on white wine, but this red comes from a small plot of Pinot Noir vines planted to limestone soils. The vines are farmed biodynamically and organically, and the wine is aged in used French oak barrels. Upon sampling this wine, we were indeed transported by the freshly picked ripe raspberry aromas to “les jardins”; bright cherry fruit notes and light damp earth tones confirmed the garden vibe. This would be a beautiful pairing with salmon, a charcuterie platter, or as suggested by the Boesch family, with “Boudin a la pomme”, a traditional French dish featuring blood sausage and apples.

Iuzzolini 2021 Cirò Rosso Classico, Calabria, Italy (Tim)

From Calabria, Italy’s “toe of the boot”, this is a lighter weight red made from the relatively obscure Gaglioppo grape, known to be an offspring of Sangiovese. The town of Cirò is located on the Ionian Sea’s central coast, a hub of wine production for at least 3000 years. In fact, wine from Cirò was offered to victors of the ancient Olympics! Featuring notes of cherry, strawberry, earth and leather, this is a fantastic pairing for cured meats. This is the red to chill down and tuck in your picnic basket to enjoy with friends with a platter of cheeses and charcuterie or fried chicken.

Coster Olivers 2018 Priorat, Spain (Jen & Jerry)

60% Carignan, 30% Garnacha, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon figure into the blend in this Priorat wine from vines planted to typical slate soils. Aged 12 months in Hungarian and American oak, this is a bright and juicy styled red by Eric Solomon. Red and black fruit, graphite, and leather notes mark this full-bodied wine. We found this to be a fresh and relatively affordable representation of Priorat. Pair with grilled or smoked meats or find a quality aged Manchego cheese to enjoy with this bottling.

FitaPreta Vinhos a Touriga Va Nua 2020 Touriga Nacional, Portugal (Aron)

In addition to making wonderful wines, the Alentejo region of Portugal is responsible for over half of the world’s cork production.  This example of Alentejo red is made from Touriga Nacional, a grape often compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. Featuring loads of brooding blueberry, blackberry and plum notes, this unoaked red is lush but also light on its feet, making it a great warm weather red. Enjoy with beef or pork tenderloin, or cheeseburgers.
