Clos Guirouilh Jurancon Sec (Pat)

Clos Guirouilh (pronounced Kloh Gee-rooy) has an unbroken winemaking tradition dating back to the 16th Century. Located in Southwest France on the leeward side of the Pyrenees Mountains, they benefit from the Foehn; a warm, dry, steady wind out of the south. The vines are planted on steep slopes, to clay-calcareous soils with yellow sandstone.  Harvest takes place over months, sometimes into December in ideal vintages. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, and 25% of the wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. The wines rest in the cellar until Jean Guirouilh deems them ready for release, without regard to normal convention or modern timelines. A blend of Gros Manseng and Courbu grapes, this is a dry white exuding acacia and white flowers on the nose, while complex and layered flavors of citrus, apple and stone fruit delight the palate. Refreshing acidity and a waxy texture make this a wonderful pairing with dried ham, seafood, and cheeses, especially goat cheese.

Eshcol 2019 Red Wine by Trefethen, Napa, California (Pat)

Eshcol was the original name of the estate where Trefethen stands now, with grapes first planted in the 1800s. This wine is a nod to the history of the land. We’ve always been fans of Trefethen’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, so were eager to try this Bordeaux-styled blend. Comprised of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller parts Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, this shows bright blackberry and dried cherry fruit notes with moderate tannins and balanced acidity. Villa Maria 2020 “Earth Garden” Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (Pat)

Recent container ship delays have caused shortages of many of our favorite New Zealand wines, sending us scurrying for replacements.  Pat Darr was sent this wine to sample and review for his weekly wine column, and he liked it very much! This exuberant 100% Sauvignon Blanc shows lime and grapefruit notes with tones of lemongrass and passionfruit.  Zesty acidity makes this an ideal pairing with salads, roasted vegetables, or passed party appetizers like shrimp cocktail. The “Earth Garden” name is a nod to the winery’s sustainability efforts, from intentional plantings in the vineyard that attract beneficial insects, repel harmful pests, and encourage water conservation, to eschewing the use of synthetic chemicals with the goal of eliminating 100% of them by 2030.  ORGANIC and VEGAN

Ovum 2019 “Old Love”, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Tim)

Couple John and Ksenija House established Ovum in 2011 with the aim of producing only white wines from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat.  This is primarily Riesling made using native fermentations and 8-9 months lees contact in neutral oak, cement egg, Austrian cask, and amphora in a method that was inspired by 1800s Austrian winemaking.  The goal at Ovum is of course to make wines reflective of their terroir, with minimum intervention from the winemaker.  This is a dry and texturally rich Riesling, showing notes of peach, blood orange, lemon, saline and minerally stone.  There really couldn’t be a more versatile wine to pair at your Thanksgiving table; this will pair equally well with the roasted bird, sweet yams and cranberry sauce.

Patricia Green Cellars “Dollar Bills Only” 2020 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Aron)

Sadly, the calamitous smoke, wind and fire in Willamette Valley surrounding Labor Day Weekend damaged much of Patricia Green Cellars’ 2020 harvest.  What they could salvage, they declassified and put into this bottling of Pinot Noir.  The moniker comes from an iconic Willamette Valley dive bar named Lumpy’s, where a jukebox is labeled “Dollar Bills Only”, a nod to making the best out of a down-on-your-luck situation. Silky textured with notes of rose petal, raspberry and orange peel, this wine offers richness and a long, lingering finish.  This wine is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Patricia Green at a far lower price point than typical; try pairing with salmon or roast poultry.

Pike Road 2020 Pinot Gris, Oregon (Andres)

One of our favorite Oregon Pinot Gris by Elk Cove is out of stock in distribution; but led us to a great find in Pike Road, Elk Cove’s “sister winery”.  Situated just outside the town of Yamhill in Western Willamette, Pike Road winds through farmland, and the vineyards sit right above this country road at a lower elevation than the Elk Cove Vineyards, resulting in riper fruit and a more exuberant expression of Pinot Gris. Showing luscious layers of green apple, melon and citrus fruit notes, this fresh and inviting white wine makes an excellent aperitif.

Elio Altare 2019 Barbera d’Alba, Italy (Andrew)

Elio Altare famously traveled to Burgundy in 1976 to refine his winemaking techniques, returning to Piedmont to destroy the old oak barriques in his father’s cellar and spurring a “Barolo Revolution”. The new Nebbiolo expressions would be more nuanced and elegant in style.  Elio’s father disinherited him and their relationship was never mended, but he became one of the most well-respected Barolo producers, his 2010 Barolo achieving the New York Times #1 in a study of Barolos and regularly earning high marks from the most discriminating of critics. Elio still runs the estate with his two daughters along with his many other projects including cheesemaking in Castelmagno and making Sparkling wine in the Langa hills.  This Barbera spends five months in used French barriques, and gives off aromas of violets and black cherries, medium-bodied and plush with dark red fruit notes and food friendly acidity. Talbott 2019 Kali Hart Chardonnay, California (Tim)

Nectarine, apple, honeysuckle and vanilla are the flavor notes on this full-bodied, rich and creamy white by Robert Talbott and named for his daughter Kali Hart.  Some of the Kali Hart Chardonnay grapes come from Talbott’s Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, in the northern portion of the Santa Lucia Highlands with a long, cool growing season and gravelly loam soils, making for rich, concentrated flavors; while other grapes come from Olson Vineyard, in the southern portion of Santa Lucia Highlands, with warmer days and granite and limestone soils, contributing soft acidity and richness. A mere 5% of the French oak is new, making for a balanced expression that will pair wonderfully with cream of crab soup or baked chicken with lemon and rosemary.

Center of Effort 2018 “Effort” Pinot Noir, Edna Valley, California (Aron)

The very cool climate and lean soils of the Edna Valley foothills of California set the stage for excellent Pinot Noir making.  “Center of Effort” refers to the intersection of caretaking, skill, commitment and a passion for excellence in the pursuit of making the best wines they can – without deference to expediency. Black raspberry, cola and spice flavor notes give way to more savory elements of bay leaf, thyme and earth. This would be lovely with roast chicken or pork dishes.

AT Roca 2019 Reserva Cava, Classic Penedes, Spain (Pat)

Agustì Torello (AT) Roca founded AT Roca in 2013 with his father and aunt. DO Classic Penedes is a newer, smaller DO that requires organic certification to join. The DO was formed by a small number of growers that wanted to break away from the Cava DO, a DO with no physical boundary known for pumping out large amounts of Sparkling wine that does not reflect the Spanish terroir (75% of production comes from two enormous megawineries).  This more serious Cava rests 15 months on the lees, made in the Champagne method, hand harvested from a single vintage and with zero dosage, a decidedly dry profile. Guilhem Goisot 2020 Aligotè, France (Pat)

While Chardonnay reigns as the chief white wine grape grown in Burgundy, a small amount of Aligotè is also cultivated. Aligotè is also the wine that is mixed with Crème de Cassis to make a classic Kir cocktail. This example, biodynamically farmed by father and son team Guilhem and Jean-Hugues Goisot, is hand-harvested, unoaked and aged on the lees to provide a lovely weight and texture.  Perfect to sip on a hot summer day, this shows lemon custard notes and bright, vivacious acidity.

El Porvenir de Cafayate 2020 Absoluto Torrontes, Cafayate Valley, Argentina (Andres)

This Torrontes is grown at high altitude (5740 ft above sea level) in Salta, Argentina, a region that enjoys huge diurnal temperature shifts, poor soils and almost desert-like climate conditions, ideal for grape growing! Owned and operated by the Romero family since 2000, the estate enjoys the privilege of icon Paul Hobbs as wine consultant. Heady floral aromas of acacia and lilies and a palate awash with orange peel, lemon zest and a zippy dose of acidity, this would be a great alternative for people who enjoy Pinot Grigio or Viognier.

Alain de la Treille Sauvignon Blanc, France (Tim)

Some of the vines for this 100% Sauvignon Blanc fall outside of the Loire Valley AOC, thus the Vin de France classification on the label. However, the wine still holds classic Loire Valley appeal, with pleasurable aromas and flavors of lime and grapefruit bolstered by a fine streak of mineral. Enjoy as a refreshing aperitif, or with mussels, clams or seafood prepared with a citrus based sauce.

Colline del Sole Falanghina Sannio, Campania, Italy (Aron)

Another great seafood wine, this bright refreshing white is made from 100% Falanghina grown in Falanghina del Sannio, an area in Campania, the “shin” of the boot located just North of Naples. Ancient philosopher Pliny the Elder enjoyed this region and the wines grown here, and in fact his phrase “in vino veritas” (in wine there is truth) is thought to be inspired by the region. This dry wine shows notes of orange peel and a hint of spice, and Campanians pair it with the abundant seafood or local specialty buffalo mozzarella pizza.
