Tinazzi 2018 Valpolicella Ripasso Superior, Italy (Tim)

Crafted from fresh Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes in the Veneto region of Italy, this wine undergoes a unique winemaking process. After an initial fermentation, it becomes Valpolicella. After Tinazzi makes their Amarone wine, they have leftover Amarone skins and pomace. They then mix the Valpolicella wine with these Amarone leftovers and referment the wine. This process adds wonderful flavor, body and complexity. Aged for about a year in French and American oak, this medium-bodied red then becomes Valpolicella Ripasso, showing red cherry fruit notes, as well as delicate tones of prune, nutmeg and balsamic. Pair with homemade pasta with ragù, mushroom risotto, or braised short ribs. (If you were wondering, in contrast, Amarone is made only from dried grapes, not fresh grapes, is barrel aged for 2 years, and is typically a bolder wine. Plus, more $$$.)

The Nuna Vineyard, located at 3,150 ft elevation, was Chakana’s first Demeter certified organic vineyard.  “Nuna”, translating to “soul” in the native Quechua language, reflects the passion the family has for winemaking in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Agrelo, Mendoza. This, their white blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Viognier (only the tiny proportion of Viognier sees a small amount of oak in the production process, while the other grapes see only stainless steel) offers up fresh aromatics of pineapple, apricot, honeysuckle and peach.  Medium-bodied, the blend shows a palate of white peach, lemon and grapefruit, finishing with a hint of limestone. Garalis “Terra Ambera” 2019, Lemnos Island, Greece (Jen & Jerry)

Lemnos is a wine-producing island in the northern Aegean Sea, one of the larger Greek Islands stretching 20 miles from east to west.  This is a skin contact or “orange” wine, made by allowing the white wine grape must (crushed grapes with skins, seeds and stems) to macerate in a manner similar to the way red wines are made. The result is a golden-hued, slightly astringent wine.  This is also bottled unfined and unfiltered, which explains the cloudy, murky appearance.  Many natural winemakers feel that filtering and fining strips the wine of important flavors and complexity.  Made from the grape Muscat of Alexandria with 5 days of skin contact, this shows pronounced amazing waxy and floral aromatics, followed by flavors of citrus and a light tannic astringency. Without supply shortages of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc we might not have discovered this delightful wine from Awatere Valley in Marlborough, owned by local Maori. Each Tohu bottle shows a logo derived from a koru pattern, a spiral symbolizing growth, life and the natural world in their culture. The wines are “Nga hua a te whenua”, or “our gift from the land.” This bright, vibrant Sauvignon Blanc is indeed a gift, featuring notes of pineapple, pink grapefruit and citrus zest, with herbal notes and acidity making a lovely pairing with seafood with citrus sauces, shrimp, or mussels.

Clos Guirouilh Jurancon Sec (Pat)

Clos Guirouilh (pronounced Kloh Gee-rooy) has an unbroken winemaking tradition dating back to the 16th Century. Located in Southwest France on the leeward side of the Pyrenees Mountains, they benefit from the Foehn; a warm, dry, steady wind out of the south. The vines are planted on steep slopes, to clay-calcareous soils with yellow sandstone.  Harvest takes place over months, sometimes into December in ideal vintages. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, and 25% of the wine is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. The wines rest in the cellar until Jean Guirouilh deems them ready for release, without regard to normal convention or modern timelines. A blend of Gros Manseng and Courbu grapes, this is a dry white exuding acacia and white flowers on the nose, while complex and layered flavors of citrus, apple and stone fruit delight the palate. Refreshing acidity and a waxy texture make this a wonderful pairing with dried ham, seafood, and cheeses, especially goat cheese.

Villa Maria 2020 “Earth Garden” Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (Pat)

Recent container ship delays have caused shortages of many of our favorite New Zealand wines, sending us scurrying for replacements.  Pat Darr was sent this wine to sample and review for his weekly wine column, and he liked it very much! This exuberant 100% Sauvignon Blanc shows lime and grapefruit notes with tones of lemongrass and passionfruit.  Zesty acidity makes this an ideal pairing with salads, roasted vegetables, or passed party appetizers like shrimp cocktail. The “Earth Garden” name is a nod to the winery’s sustainability efforts, from intentional plantings in the vineyard that attract beneficial insects, repel harmful pests, and encourage water conservation, to eschewing the use of synthetic chemicals with the goal of eliminating 100% of them by 2030.  ORGANIC and VEGAN

Ovum 2019 “Old Love”, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Tim)

Couple John and Ksenija House established Ovum in 2011 with the aim of producing only white wines from Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat.  This is primarily Riesling made using native fermentations and 8-9 months lees contact in neutral oak, cement egg, Austrian cask, and amphora in a method that was inspired by 1800s Austrian winemaking.  The goal at Ovum is of course to make wines reflective of their terroir, with minimum intervention from the winemaker.  This is a dry and texturally rich Riesling, showing notes of peach, blood orange, lemon, saline and minerally stone.  There really couldn’t be a more versatile wine to pair at your Thanksgiving table; this will pair equally well with the roasted bird, sweet yams and cranberry sauce.

Patricia Green Cellars “Dollar Bills Only” 2020 Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon (Aron)

Sadly, the calamitous smoke, wind and fire in Willamette Valley surrounding Labor Day Weekend damaged much of Patricia Green Cellars’ 2020 harvest.  What they could salvage, they declassified and put into this bottling of Pinot Noir.  The moniker comes from an iconic Willamette Valley dive bar named Lumpy’s, where a jukebox is labeled “Dollar Bills Only”, a nod to making the best out of a down-on-your-luck situation. Silky textured with notes of rose petal, raspberry and orange peel, this wine offers richness and a long, lingering finish.  This wine is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Patricia Green at a far lower price point than typical; try pairing with salmon or roast poultry.
