This wine celebrates the tradition of this family that has been tending vines in Valdobbiadene since 1542. Valdobbiadene is widely considered to be the premium location and the best vineyards for growing Glera, the grape that makes Prosecco.  “Crede” refers to the clay dominated soil.  This beautiful Prosecco is heady with wild flower aromatics, and elegant with notes of apple and pear on the persistent, rich finish. With 7g/l residual sugar, this sparkler straddles the border between dry and off-dry.

Anton Bauer 2017 Berg Feuersbrunn Riesling (Andres)

Anton Bauer is the fourth generation of his family to be running the estate, taking over from his parents after years of training in Burgundy and Lower Austria. He received the prestigious “Winemaker of the Year” award in 2017 by Falstafff. Located south of Feuersbrunn in the Wagram region of Austria, the Riesling grapes for this wine come from Ried Berg, a vineyard with soils dominated by slate, bedrock and granite, making for lean, minerally white wines. Featuring fresh stone fruit and mandarin notes and racy acidity, this is the perfect aperitif to serve on a warm spring evening or paired with a spicy meal.  This wine has about 5g/L residual sugar, placing it in the upper end of the “dry” category.

Philippe Milan et Fils 2018 Bourgogne Chardonnay, France (Andrew)

Situated in the hamlet of Valotte in Chassey-Le-Camp, the winery is run by Karl Milan, who took over the estate in 2001. Philippe Milan was Karl’s grandfather, who founded the winery in the 1950s. Today the domaine consists of 27 acres spread across seven Burgundy AOCs.   This 100% Chardonnay undergoes malolactic fermentation and then ages 10 months in barrel, mostly used, to maintain freshness and balance. Showing pretty ripe fruit notes, delicately subtle oak influence and a hint of citrus on the finish, this wine will pair nicely with seared scallops, salmon, or a buttery roasted chicken.

Lone Birch 2019 Rosè, Yakima Valley, Washington (Jen & Jerry)

Subtle floral aromatics are accompanied by refreshing strawberry, rhubarb and raspberry fruit notes in this round, dry (.7% residual sugar) rosè with a crisp finish, crafted from 83% Syrah and 17% Sangiovese, all estate-grown.   The lone birch tree featured on the label does exist, and was planted by the great-great grandfather of the current proprietor.  His love of nature provides inspiration to the current generation, who strives to reduce their carbon footprint and utilizes sustainable farming practices.

St Cosme Little James Basket Vin de France, Rhone, France (Pat)

Chateau de Saint Cosme is an excellent producer located in Gigondas, where they produce outstanding Gigondas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines. In contrast, this delightfully simple table wine is still delicious but a small fraction of the cost of the premier bottlings. Made from 100% Grenache, this wine utilizes the unique solera method, where each bottling contains 50% of the current harvest and 50% of the solera containing wine from each harvest over the last 20 years. This introduces depth and complexity to this wine that exudes cherry, strawberry and subtle spice, the palate soft and easy to drink.  Try with pizza or chili.

Serol 2018 Eclat de Granite Cote Roannaise, Loire Valley, France (Jen & Jerry)

Stephane Serol and his wife Carine took over this 12 hectare estate in 1996, when they converted production to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The Cote Roannaise AOP is located at the foothills of the Madeleine Mountains in the Loire Valley, boasting higher altitude and granitic soils, ideal for growing the Gamay grape. This Gamay spends 7-10 months in cement tanks, seeing no oak.  With notes of strawberries, dark red cherries and just a hint of cranberry brightness and earth, the very soft and elegant mouthfeel makes this a red that can be enjoyed with fish, poultry, and pork. This could be a fun alternative to Pinot Noir if you are looking to try something new. Certified ORGANIC and BIODYNAMIC

A new addition to our Greece section, this wine by Skouras is comprised of 90% Aghiorgitiko and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation and aging in stainless steel keeps it fresh and lively.  The nose features blackberry, plum, and violet notes, as well as dried herbs. Viñalba 2017 Malbec Reserva, Valle de Uco, Argentina (Aron)

This 100% Malbec from Uco Valley is grown on vines in the foothills of mountain ranges, about 950m above sea level.  Viñalba is a family-owned estate, run by husband and wife team Hervè and Diane Joyaux Fabre.  Hervè was born in Bordeaux and immigrated to Argentina in the early 1990s.  He also built Fabre Montmayou, a winery in Lujàn de Cuyo near Mendoza. This bold red spends 12 months in 60% French oak, showing bright berry fruit, blackcurrant, black plum and toasty vanilla oak notes. Rich with a smooth, long finish, this will be a wonderful pairing with grilled steaks.

Shalauri 2018 Rkatsiteli-Mtsvane, Republic of Georgia (Andrew)

Although not certified organic, this wine is quite naturally made, without any industrial yeast or additives and bottled unfined, unfiltered and using minimal sulfites. Made from indigenous grapes Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane Kakhuri, the wine is fermented and aged in kvevris (traditional clay pots) that have been used for centuries in this ancient winemaking culture.  This is an orange wine, a dry wine that takes its color from contact with the grape skins giving it an amber hue.

Try a bottle of this dry but juicy rosè made from the Zweigelt grape.  Exuding freshness and notes of raspberry, pomegranate and wild berry on the nose, the palate senses strawberry and red currant notes with good acidity. This is a great aperitif, but has enough body to stand up to grilled chicken and vegetables.

Biggio Hamina 2017 Biha Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon (Pat)

Eola-Amity hills enjoys largely volcanic basalt from ancient lava flows with a marine sedimentary soil layer.  The beds are shallow, rocky, and well-drained, making for small, intensely concentrated grapes. The positioning in a break in Coast Mountain Range allows cool ocean winds, allowing late afternoon temperature drops. Todd Biggio of Biggio Hamina likes to make minimal intervention wines…you might find some sediment at the bottom of the bottle and this is by design. He likes to make wines that are still “living”, and therefore eschews the use of filtering, glycols, or temperature controls.  This elegant Pinot Noir features vibrant cherry fruit, cinnamon, herb and a gentle whisper of French oak.  Try with grilled chicken or salmon.

Mas des Capitelles 2018 Faugeres VV, Languedoc-Roussillon, France (Jen & Jerry)

From the appellation of Faugeres in the Languedoc-Roussillon of Southern France comes this blend of 50% Mourvedre, 25% Carignan and 25% Syrah. Owner Jean Laugè purchased the property in 1999, but his family has been involved in winemaking for 10 generations.  This brooding red features ripe cherry and black currant notes, leather and black olive, and a spicy, peppery finish. Good structure and ripe tannins make this an ideal pairing with grilled lamb chops or beef. Certified ORGANIC.

Tenuta Toscante 2017 Ghiaia Nera Mascalese, Sicily, Italy (Tim)

Located in the northeast coast of Sicily, Mount Etna is the tallest and most active volcano in Europe.  The volcanic soils here make for great winemaking, including Tasca’s Etna Tascante project.  This alluring red made from the Nerello Mascalese grape is medium-bodied, showing wild cherry and blue flower notes with a minerally undercurrent. Aged in large oak barrels, it is still fresh and energetic. Look to the dishes of Sicily for food inspiration; sardines and other oily fish, or pork served with Mediterranean vegetables like eggplant, capers, and wild mushrooms. Rated 91pts RP.

Balius 2018 Merlot, Sonoma Coast, California (Andres)

Balius was one of Achilles two immortal horses, a heroic figure of Greek legend.  Made from Sonoma fruit, this is 100% Merlot aged in a combination of stainless steel and French oak for 18 months.  The result is a red with a rich, velvety mouthfeel, showing elegant black cherry and blackberry notes with a hint of spice.   Merlot is still relatively unpopular compared to Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, maligned by the movie “Sideways” in 2004.  What this means is you can generally find some great values in the Merlot aisle! This will pair nicely with grilled steaks or flavorful cheeses such as blue cheese, aged cheddar, or gorgonzola.

We’ve been fans of the Charles Brotte wines for a good while, enjoying their value priced Cotes-du-Rhone and Chateauneuf-du-Pape very much. Try this delicious white blend of grapes that commonly fare well in northern regions: 35% Muller-Thurgau, 29% Gewurztraminer, 24% Riesling and 12% Pinot Gris.  The perfect summer sipping wine, this exudes scents of orange blossom, ripe honeydew, guava and kiwi while the round palate is full with flavors of stone fruits, lemons and pear.  Clean, bright, and refreshing and at 1.6% residual sugar still quite dry. A striking example of absolutely delicious yet super affordable wine, this white is comprised of 40% Columbard, 45% Ugni Blanc and 15% Gros Manseng, aged in stainless steel on its lees. Do Ferreiro 2017 Albariño, Rias Baixas, Spain (Tim)

Founded in 1973, Do Ferreiro is run by Gerardo Mèndez and his son Manuel. They farm 175 plots of Albariño in the best sub-zone of Salnès, a valley that enjoys proximity to the ocean as well as protection by mountain ranges.  Using indigenous yeasts and organic farming methods (they are not certified organic), their wines are clean and ageworthy. This white has great concentration and complexity, showing floral and citrus notes and a saline component. Good acidity makes this a wonderful pairing with grilled pork or chicken dishes. From the heart of Tuscany just north of Siena comes this lovely white wine made from the Vernaccia grape. Mentioned in poems by Dante as far back as the 13thcentury, this is an ancient varietal that has been enjoyed by Tuscans for centuries. Yves Gros and family have been farming Domaine les Fouques biodynamically since 1991, where they also raise ducks, geese, guinea hen and sheep in a valley just a few miles north of the Mediterranean Sea.  The vines grow on hillsides below the forests where wild boar roam freely, and eucalyptus, lavender and pine grow all around. Made from 50% Grenache, 31% Cinsault, 11% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Rolle, this dry rosè is fresh and energetic, offering citrus and red berry aromatics and juicy tangerine and raspberry flavors. Brigaldara is situated just north of Verona in the heart of the Valpolicella region, where they produce excellent Amarone and Valpolicella red wines, olive oil, and the famous black summer truffles.  The villa and garden on the property date back to the 15thcentury.   This white wine, their Soave, is made from 100% Garganega grapes.  Showing citrus zest, mineral and almond with crisp acidity and a slick texture, this would be great with pasta or seafood or chicken with pesto.

This was the star of a recent tasting we conducted, searching for new Burgundy white wines for Mills. Domaine de Roally is part of the Thevenet estate, making Chardonnay on clay-limestone soils, farmed organically, harvested by hand and made without the use of oak. Medium to full-bodied and showing enchanting notes of lime blossom, acacia honey and fresh peach, this Chardonnay is a lovely and harmonious wine that left us wanting more. This would be an excellent accompaniment to rich lobster or crab dishes, but would also be lovely on the porch with a cheese platter. Rated 91pts Robert Parker.

Penley Estate 2018 “Phoenix” Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawara, Australia (Pat)

Coonawarra is King for Cabernet growing as far as South Australia is concerned!  This area is known for its unique terra rossa soils, a thin band of vivid red earth overlaying huge bands of soft limestone. Mineral rich soils, good drainage and cold winters contribute to a long ripening process and great Cabernet. Medium to full-bodied, this deep and savory red shows cassis, wild blackberry and plum with underlying herb, mint, and spice tones. Rated 91pts Wine Spectator. Enjoy with steaks or roasts.

Grifalco 2017 Aglianico del Vulture Bricos, Basilicata, Italy (Tim)

Volcanic soil dominates the appellation of Vulture in Southern Italy, where the Piccin family makes this Aglianico.  Aglianico was brought to Italy by Greeks in the 6thcentury, where it was a key ingredient in the production of Falernum, a wine consumed by kings and poets!  The grapes for this wine come from four different vineyards, and the wine is aged 10 months in barrique and tonneaux. Featuring blackberry, black cherry, licorice and wild herb, this has moderate tannins and is well structured, making it an ideal accompaniment to grilled meats.

Craggy Range 2018 Te Kahu, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand (Andres)

Craggy Range is a producer of excellent reputation in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, and we’ve carried their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir for a long time. This, their Bordeaux-style red comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot comes from the Hawkes Bay vineyard of Gimblett Gravels. As it sounds, the soils are composed of deep gravel beds with lenses of clay, silt and sand, which the roots have to work very hard to reach for sustenance. Medium-bodied with ripe cherry fruit and tobacco notes, this shows very subtle oak influence and a silky smooth finish. Enjoy with grilled or roasted meats.

Cune Viña Real Rioja 2016 Crianza, Spain(Andres)

Rioja is divided into 3 subregions; Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Oriental, all with their own unique geographic and climatic characteristics. Viña Real is Cune’s Rioja Alavesa arm, enjoying high elevation and chalk and limestone dominated soils that produce wines rich in character.  This wine, made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano matures in French and American oak for a little over a year.  This medium-bodied red is pretty and floral and also deep and complex with notes of blackberry, blackcurrants, spice and toast. Rafael Tirado “Vistalago” 2018 Mezcla Blanca, Maule Valley, Chile (Jen and Jerry)

A unique blend of 55% Riesling, 25% Chardonnay, 15% Torrontes and 5% Semillon grown in granite soils, this wine sees no oak, only stainless steel and concrete tanks. It’s a dry, interesting, complex wine with good acidity, showing refreshing notes of lemon, ripe pear, and pineapple. Rafael’s vineyard is located near the Chilean Andes at about 1800ft altitude, the vines planted in 1993. This wine will pair well with a variety of seafood dishes, sushi or shrimp cocktail.

Spellbound 2018 Chardonnay, California (Tim)

Especially as the weather cools, a California Chardonnay can be the perfect pairing for fall soups such as butternut squash, cream of crab or lobster bisque, or an oven roasted chicken. This version shows lush tropical fruit flavors and classic California notes of vanilla and crème brulee from brief aging in French and American oak. Grapes for this wine are sourced from various sites in California, and while the label doesn’t name a prestigious appellation that might come with a hefty price tag, we found it to be a great value for the price!

Barbi 2018 Orvieto Classico Abboccato DOC, Umbria, Italy (Pat)

Orvieto is not a grape but a hilltop community in the landlocked region of Umbria, a landscape graced with green rolling hills.  Orvieto is perched atop a volcanic or “tufo” dominated stone, a soil that lends a lovely minerality to the wines. Wines have been grown here since the Etruscan times, with some of those ancient cellars still in use today. This off-dry to dry white wine is comprised of 40% Grechetto, 30% Procanico, 20% Sauvignon and 10% Vermentino. Aromas of white peach, golden apple and white pepper join flavors of almond on the palate. This is a lighter wine that can be used as an aperitif or with light appetizers, or would compliment seafood or shellfish, or spicy dishes.

Montfin 2019 Rosè L’etang Danse, Corbieres, France (Aron)

We love this recently arrived Rosè from Corbieres, a region in the Languedoc. This tiny estate has been run by Jerome Esteve and his wife, and their 3 adorable donkeys Laouset, Bahia and Aglae since 2009; they organically farm tiny yields of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault, with some of their vines approaching 60 years of age. Super expressive of ripe red berry fruit and flowers on the nose, the palate is awash with juicy raspberry and orange pith with a slight white pepper note on the finish. Made from 50% Grenache Noir, 45% Cinsault, and 5% Syrah, this is refreshing, flavorful and delicious, and we thought a great value for a boutique, hand-made, not-mass-produced wine. ORGANIC

Bright strawberry fruit and darker, brooding cherry fruit notes show on this light to medium-bodied Pinot Noir that sees some time in French oak. Grayson Cellars makes their wine in Napa but sources grapes from all over California for their wines.  Winemaker Larry Levin was involved in winemaking at Dry Creek Vineyards as well as Franciscan, Robert Mondavi, Ravenswood, and Quintessa before taking the helm at Grayson. His goal is to produce truly affordable wines that stay true to their varietal. Pair this with roasted poultry dishes or grilled fatty fishes.

Reserve de la Dame a l’Ouiseau Cotes du Rhone, France (Pat)

We’ve long carried the Cotes du Rhone Blanc from this Rhone Valley cooperative, but recently accidentally ordered the Cotes du Rhone Rouge, a happy surprise! This blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah sports raspberry and cherry fruit notes and gentle spice notes. The wine doesn’t see any oak, and it’s medium bodied, making it easy to pair with a wide variety of foods from roasted or grilled chicken to stuffed pork chops or grilled pork tenderloin.

This delightful 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo aged in stainless steel and oak shows mineral laced flavors of blackberry, black pepper, licorice and coffee. “Cocca di Casa” roughly translates to “the one we coddle more”, referring to the locals’ dedication and honor to the Montepulciano grape in Abruzzo- it’s what they love to grow, and what they love to drink. This wine has decent tannins, so can pair well with rich, fatty foods like grilled sausage-topped pizza or hamburgers, or as cooking comes indoors with shepherd’s pie or osso bucco.

Domaine de FA 2016 “Roche Guillon” Fleurie, France (Andrew)

Tasting a high-quality single-vineyard Cru Beaujolais such as this wine can be an eye-opening experience for those used to the light-hearted fruitiness and bubble gum appeal of the famous Beaujolais Nouveau. This is a more serious expression of the Gamay grape, produced by the Graillot family of Northern Rhone fame since purchasing 5 hectares in Fleurie in 2013. Juicy and complex with flavors of cherry, tea, wild herb and mineral, this is medium-bodied red with a lightly tannic finish.  Serve just slightly chilled with sausage, roast chicken or a cheese board. Autumn is a wonderful time to experience Bordeaux wines, this version made from 80% Merlot and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Purchased in 1997 by Pierre Lurton, the current CEO at prestigious Chateau d’Yquem and Director of Cheval Blanc, this estate is located in the far less pedigreed Entre-deux-Mers area of Bordeaux.  Showing forest floor, tobacco, black plums and blackberries, this is full-bodied with firm tannins, and best consumed with food!  Try with grilled lamb chops or roasted beef. Maitre de Chai 2017 Stampede Clements Hills Zinfandel, Lodi, California (Andres)

“Maitre de Chai” translates to “Cellar Master”, and reflects founders Alex Pitts and Marty Winters belief in minimal intervention winemaking. The label comes from an 1883 book “The Wine Press and the Cellar” by Emmett Rixford. Try this mostly Zinfandel with small amounts of Mission and Carignan added, fermented in neutral oak and then aged for one year. Showing fresh ripe red plum and raspberry notes, this has manageable tannins and fresh acidity, with a touch of pleasing spice on the long finish. Try with grilled or roasted beef or game dishes.

Made with 100% organically grown Chenin Blanc, this was made without any winemaking inputs (no added sugar, yeast or sulphur) making it a natural wine and no dosage, making it brut nature/bone dry. Showing aromas of hazelnuts and brioche, the bubbles are light and fine, soft even. Good acid makes this a nice pairing with a variety of cheeses and appetizers! ORGANIC

Anheuser 2018 Blanc de Noir, Nahe, Germany (Tim)

The Southwest Germany winegrowing region of Nahe was named for the river Nahe that winds through the vineyards. This unusual white wine is termed a “Blanc de Noir” or literally “white from black”; it is a still wine despite the use of the terminology we normally associate with sparkling wines made from red wine grapes.  This was made from free-run juice of Pinot Noir grapes, giving it a coppery hue, it shows pretty raspberry notes, nectarine and herbs and a very German-esque petrol note. This could be a lovely choice for the Thanksgiving table.

This was the star of a recent tasting we conducted of new potential Italian wines, charming us with flavors of cherry, plum, black pepper and violets, fresh acidity and a harmonious mouthfeel. From just outside Rome, Cesanase is an ancient grape varietal that has been grown by Romans for centuries. In Lazio, the locals will drink this with Veal Saltimbocca or Pasta all’Amatriciana.

Bandol is a coastal Provence appellation surrounding the fishing village of Bandol.  With limestone soils and warm ocean breezes, the late-ripening, difficult grape Mourvedre thrives. This red made from 90% Mourvedre and 10% Grenache spends 18 months in oak. There are not many Swiss wines available in the United States, but a cursory search produced this wine made from the Fendant grape, also known as Chasselas, grown prevalently on the Lake Geneva coastline and in the Valais region.  Showing good minerality, lime blossom and floral notes and refreshing acidity, this is traditionally paired with raclette or fondue, but would also work well with seafood dishes.

St Nikolaus 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese, Germany (Tim)

The St Nikolaus-Hospital estate is the oldest estate in the Middle Mosel region, founded in 1458 by philosopher Nikolaus von Kues, who eventually became Cardinal and founded the St Nikolaus Hospital, a social service institution that’s been operating since 1465. The Riesling vines for this wine are planted to steep, slate laden, South-facing slopes (Sonnenuhr translates to “sundial”) overlooking the village of Brauneberg. Full-bodied, this shows luscious peach fruit notes, nice minerality and plenty of acid on the lingering finish. Try with sushi, sashimi, spicy Indian or Thai dishes, or baked ham.

Pierre-Marie Chermette 2020 Beaujolais Primeur Rosè Griottes, France (Jen & Jerry)

“Les Griottes” is named for the grove of cherry trees that surrounds the vineyard. This dry Rosè is made from the first harvest of Gamay grapes of the year, grown in the southernmost reaches of Beaujolais by Pierre-Marie Chermette. He uses only indigenous yeasts, bottles without filtration and little or no sulfur is used in bottling his wines. Pair with pork chops and a salad with dried cherries and goat cheese.

We were immediately charmed by this Pinot Noir made by fourth generation farmer Giovanni Balistreri in a vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills of the Russian River Valley, less than 20 miles from the coast.  Ocean, wind and fog are factors here, allowing for the grapes to ripen slowly.  Bright acidity accompanies pretty notes of bing cherry, earth, and forest floor in this elegant, minerally Pinot Noir, perfect for a special occasion or meal. Try with beef tenderloin, rich fish such as salmon, or roasted poultry.

A blend of 77% Carignan, 15% Valdiguie (aka Gros Auxerrois in France), and 8% Syrah grown along the North Coast, Mendocino and Solano County Green Valley is harvested early to showcase brighter fruit and to preserve acidity. The wine is aged in a combination of neutral French oak and concrete tanks.  This red is a juicy, light-on-its-feet wine showing tart cherry, raspberry and touches of spice.
