WINES TO TASTE SATURDAY 2-6pm

Principe Pallavicini 2017 Poggio Verde Frascati Superiore, DOCG, Lazio, Italy (Pat)

This Italian white wine bears a resemblance to Sauvignon Blanc, but is actually a blend of 50% Malvasia di Candia, 20% Malvasia del Lazio, and 20% Greco and Grechetto and 10% Trebbiano Toscano grown outside of Rome. A nose of blossoms and tropical fruit gives way to flavors of citrus, gooseberry and saline. Crisp, clean acidity makes this suitable to drink with shellfish, pork or chicken pairings.

Colosi 2017 Grillo, Sicily, Italy (Geoff)

A simple crisp Sicilian white wine such as this Grillo can be the ideal pairing for fish, seafood, and more delicate cheeses. Third generation winemaker Pietro Colosi works with his father (also named Pietro) out of their cellar in the village of Messina. Aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle are followed by flavors of green apple, peach, apricot and the influence of the saline sea; mineral and crushed oyster shells. Bright, palate-cleansing acidity matches citrus-based sauces or cuts through cream-based dishes as well.

Walter Hansel 2015 Meadows Vineyard, Russian River Valley, California (Jess)

Walter Hansel makes some of our favorite Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, but their Chardonnay is definitely worth a look as well. This Chardonnay was bottled unfined and unfiltered from hand harvested, dry farmed grapes grown in the Meadows Vineyard, in the northernmost portion of the Hansel estate alongside Santa Rosa Creek. Aged for 10 months in 40% new French oak. This wine achieved a barrel sample score range from Robert Parker of (91-94pts), “this Chardonnay offers up concentrated notes of honeysuckle, baked apple pie, cinnamon and plenty of spice in a medium-to-full, refreshing zesty style.” Drink 2016-2021. This is an excellent value for a beautifully made Chardonnay.

Farmed entirely organically and biodynamically, this wine spends 6 months in barrique (60% French and 40% American) and exudes lush blackberry fruit and sage with easy tannins and present but moderate oak. Excellent pairing choice with grilled or braised meats.

Spending 14 months in French oak followed by an additional 1-2 years of bottle age before release makes for a beautifully smooth texture with an underlying power, grip and concentration. Rated 92pts James Suckling. Try with grilled steaks, lamb or pasta with spicy sausage.
