Join us for our popular monthly “Staff Picks” Wine tastings, where we showcase our 12 top picks each month, sampling 6 on the first Saturday of the month and the other 6 on the first Sunday. The picks are carefully selected to represent great value for the price, and to pair with seasonally available food. This is a complimentary tasting, no reservations required!

Marques de Caceres 2016 Verdejo, Rueda, Spain (Pat)

Consider this fresh and vibrant Spanish white wine, which features minerally tinged citrus and apple notes. Historically, red wines dominated the Rueda region before phylloxera wiped them out in the late 19th century. Most of the Verdejo vineyards enjoy significant elevation (2000 -3000 ft), which allows cooler temps in the heat of Spanish summer. Rated 88pts by Decanter, this will pair well with grilled vegetables, pasta with basil pesto, or grilled fish or shellfish.

Honig 2016 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa, California (Jen & Jerry)

We’re big fans of Honig Cabernet Sauvignon, and were excited to bring in their Sauvignon Blanc after a recent tasting. This bottling contains 95% Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Semillon, and 1% Muscat, which undoubtedly adds to the beautiful aromatics. Aging primarily takes place in stainless steel and 10% in neutral oak. Michael Honig helped write the Wine Institute’s Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices, and Honig was one of the first California wineries to earn the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing certification, and more recently they earned the Napa Green certification. Their commitment to eliminating pesticides and herbicides and using minimal water and energy in the winemaking process is impressive. Crisp and elegant, it features flavors of grapefruit, lime and lemon zest.

Marques de Moral 2011 Crianza, Valdepenas, Spain (Jen & Jerry)

Made from 100% Tempranillo aged for 6 months in oak barriques, this medium-bodied red wine features aromas of strawberries and cranberries and a richness and complexity far beyond what the price suggests! This is a fun weeknight wine and delicious with roast chicken or tacos.

Chateau Cap L’ousteau 2014 Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux, France (Jess)

As the weather starts to cool, we turn to Bordeaux to pair with the heartier dishes of fall, from lamb chops to stews. This is the second wine of Chateau du Cartillon, the vineyards located in the village of Lamarqe in Medoc. Juicy with black currants and a touch of smokiness, this wine will give you a taste of Bordeaux without breaking the bank.

Mettler 2013 “Epicenter” Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi, California (Andres)

This big bold Zin that spends 18 months in oak is an excellent pairing for grilled steaks or braised meats. Rated 90pts Wine Enthusiast and “Editor’s Choice”, “The spicy, oaky aromas are obvious and fun, leading to fully ripe flavors like blackberry jam in this full-bodied, deeply colored and velvet-textured wine. It’s big but smooth, and the oak influence is welcome, adding interest and complexity.”

Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny Port, Douro, Portugal (Jess)

This ten-year-old Tawny blend is aged for 10 years in oak casks. It displays rich sweet fruit elegantly balanced with oak. This dessert wine is a spectacular pairing with chocolate cake or other chocolate desserts. Rated 93pts Robert Parker, it represents an excellent value in Port!

Masia Puigmolto’s Can Xa Non-Vintage Brut Cava, Penedes, Spain (Tim)

A dry Spanish sparkling wine, made from a blend of 50% Xarello, 25% Macabeo and 25% Parellada, all indigenous grapes. Delicious and crisp with fresh citrus notes, orange peel and bakery, this will pair nicely with cheeses and fish dishes, but is also a wonderful aperitif.

Joh. Jos. Prum 2015 Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett Riesling, Germany (Geoff)

Graacher Himmelreich is a famed site just upstream the Mosel from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The soils and southwest exposure lend a beautiful mineral acidity to this dry powerful wine, which is loaded with complex white peach and apple notes. Rated 93pts by James Suckling, this wine by Dr. Manfred Prum is ageworthy and will continue to evolve for 20+ years. Prum is widely considered one of the top Riesling estates in Germany. Pair with Indian or Thai food.

Manoir du Carra 2015 Brouilly, Beaujolais, France (Geoff)

100% Gamay from 50 year old vines in the Beaujolais Cru of Brouilly, this ruby colored wine features notes of strawberry, raspberry and violet. Ample in the mouth, it features supple tannins and good density followed by a lengthy finish. “Combiaty” is the lieu-dit from which the grapes are sourced in the village of St. Etienne la Varenne. Roast chicken or a plate of charcuterie will be great with this wine!

Olivier Pithon “Mon P’Tit Pithon” 2016 Cotes Catalanes IGP(Pat)

Olivier’s grandfather was a famed wine producer in Anjou, and therefore Olivier became involved in making wine from the age of 4! He also collaborated with the highly esteemed Gerard Gauby. Olivier’s wines are truly reflective of the terroir, and he employs minimal intervention in the winemaking process. This bright red wine from Southern France features gorgeous red cherry and garrigue (wild herb) notes. A blend of 66% Grenache and 34% Syrah, this satisfying medium-bodied red is a no-brainer with chicken or pork dishes.

Symington Family Estates “Altano” 2013 Douro, Portugal (Tim)

This medium bodied red features fruity and floral aromas and a velvety smooth finish. Bright plum and spice characteristics figure in to this tangy and fresh wine, made from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), and Tinta Barocca. A super bargain, it pairs well with hearty roasts and casseroles.
