May Staff Picks

AT Roca 2019 Reserva Cava, Classic Penedes, Spain (Pat)

Agustì Torello (AT) Roca founded AT Roca in 2013 with his father and aunt. DO Classic Penedes is a newer, smaller DO that requires organic certification to join. The DO was formed by a small number of growers that wanted to break away from the Cava DO, a DO with no physical boundary known for pumping out large amounts of Sparkling wine that does not reflect the Spanish terroir (75% of production comes from two enormous megawineries).  This more serious Cava rests 15 months on the lees, made in the Champagne method, hand harvested from a single vintage and with zero dosage, a decidedly dry profile. Made from Macabeu, Xarello and Parellada, this wine boasts apple, lime and toasted almond notes with delicate yet persistent bubbles. Enjoy as a delightful aperitif or with seafood!

Slopes 2016 Dry Furmint, Tokaj, Hungary (Andres)

The grape name “Furmint” is believed to be derived from “froment” for the wheat gold color of the wine it produces. Crisp and delicious with pronounced apple and mineral notes, this dry white wine from Hungary has lots of acidity, making it the idea pairing for sushi, shrimp, crab, or a Hungarian specialty such as chicken paprikash. Dry Furmint is harvested in September, while the Furmint used in the famous Hungarian dessert wines are left to botrytize on the vine and are harvested in October or later.

The Seeker 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (Tim)

Back in stock after a prolonged absence, The Seeker is a delicious and relatively affordable Marlborough-style Sauvignon Blanc, showing persistent grapefruit, gooseberry and grass notes and crisp, mouthwatering acidity. Enjoy with seafood or as a well-chilled aperitif on a hot summer day.

Giovanni Almondo 2020 Arneis, Piedmont, Italy (Andrew)

Giovanni Almondo farms his Roero acres with his two sons, Federico and Stefano. The family has roots in the region dating back to the 14th century. The soils are a mixture of clay, limestone and sand.  They also grow Nebbiolo, Riesling, Barbera and Freisa. The Arneis grape historically was difficult to grow, nearing extinction before being brought back in the 1970s. Showing pretty notes of juicy apple, peach, pear and mineral, this unoaked white wine has great acidity for slicing through pasta with creamy sauce or for pairing with rockfish topped with crab imperial.

Thierry Delaunay Sauvignon Blanc, Loire Valley, France (Jen & Jerry)

With prices of Sancerre seemingly skyrocketing, we were immediately charmed by this affordable Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, which happily shares some Sancerre characteristics including the hallmark texture and minerality. Pair this citrussy gem with oysters or a cheese platter.

Domaine de Tourelles 2020 Rosè, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon  (Jen & Jerry)

It was actually a Frenchman who established Domaine de Tourelles in 1868, Francois-Eugene Brun. For over 150 years this estate has produced wonderful wine and arak. Made from Cinsault (40%), Syrah (30%) and Tempranillo (30%), this Lebanese dry Rosè with understated cherry notes would be the ideal pairing with a charcuterie, grilled fish or a traditional Lebanese mezze platter.

Roux Pere 2020 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune, France (Aron)

We ran across this Burgundy producer when looking for Saint Aubin white wines and were impressed with the value we found. Domaine Roux is located in Saint Aubin and was founded in 1885.  Still family operated, it is one of the larger Burgundy landholders. This Pinot Noir shows pretty Morello cherry and black currant notes with a touch of spice and would nicely accompany grilled chicken or pork tenderloin.

Louis Bernard 2018 Cotes du Rhone Villages, France (Tim)

This wine was dramatically discounted as our distributor had to make room in their warehouse for incoming wine. We thought it would be a great addition to our $10 wine program! Medium-bodied, this Grenache/Syrah blend shows true Rhone flavor characteristics, with black cherry, plum, bramble and more savory tones of earth and leather. Pair this steal of a deal with grilled or roasted poultry or pork with Mediterranean herbs.

Gen 5 2019 Merlot, California (Andres)

“Gen 5” refers to the Lange family’s five generations of living and farming in Lodi, with a commitment to leave the land better for each successive generation, as evidenced by achieving the Green and Sustainable Lodi Winegrower certification. This red is medium-bodied with juicy cherry and plum flavors and a smooth finish. Try with grilled lamb chops or grilled portobello mushrooms.

Cantalapiedra 2019 “Arenisca” Tinta de Toro, Spain (Andrew)

This 100% Tempranillo is grown at high elevation in organically farmed vineyards, bottled without fining or filtration.  “Arenisca” means “sandstone”, referring to the soil where the vines are planted. Toro, a region in Spain known for very bold and robust wines, is also capable of producing elegant and refined wines like this version, aged 11 months in used French oak. Beautiful red fruit notes are joined by mineral and delicate spice tones in this medium bodied red with good structure and acidity. Enjoy with pasta with Bolognese sauce, Ropa Vieja, or Paella.

MDZ 2020 Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (Aron)

The grapes for this wine come from the highlands of Mendoza, planted to vines in rocky and sandy soils at 3000 ft elevation. A fresh expression of Malbec, this bold red sees only stainless steel so is unencumbered by traditional heavy oak treatment. This full-bodied red is loaded with notes of boysenberry, blackberry and mocha and would be an ideal pairing for grilled burgers or steaks as the summer months approach!

Voces 2019 El Viajero Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma, California (Pat)

Founder and winemaker Fernando Candelario worked for 8 years at Robert Mondavi Winery, then as cellar master at the prestigious Calistogan T-Vine Cellars under Greg Brown before opening his own venture, “Voces”, in 2002.  “Voces” means “voices” in Fernando’s native language Spanish, referring to Fernando’s belief that working collaboratively within your workplace and community makes dreams possible. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon ages in French and American oak for 12-18 months, and exudes ripe plush cherry and blackberry fruit notes. This bold and harmonious wine will pair wonderfully with grilled steaks or ribs.
