June Staff Picks

Guilhem Goisot 2020 Aligotè, France (Pat)

While Chardonnay reigns as the chief white wine grape grown in Burgundy, a small amount of Aligotè is also cultivated. Aligotè is also the wine that is mixed with Crème de Cassis to make a classic Kir cocktail. This example, biodynamically farmed by father and son team Guilhem and Jean-Hugues Goisot, is hand-harvested, unoaked and aged on the lees to provide a lovely weight and texture.  Perfect to sip on a hot summer day, this shows lemon custard notes and bright, vivacious acidity.

El Porvenir de Cafayate 2020 Absoluto Torrontes, Cafayate Valley, Argentina (Andres)

This Torrontes is grown at high altitude (5740 ft above sea level) in Salta, Argentina, a region that enjoys huge diurnal temperature shifts, poor soils and almost desert-like climate conditions, ideal for grape growing! Owned and operated by the Romero family since 2000, the estate enjoys the privilege of icon Paul Hobbs as wine consultant. Heady floral aromas of acacia and lilies and a palate awash with orange peel, lemon zest and a zippy dose of acidity, this would be a great alternative for people who enjoy Pinot Grigio or Viognier.

Alain de la Treille Sauvignon Blanc, France (Tim)

Some of the vines for this 100% Sauvignon Blanc fall outside of the Loire Valley AOC, thus the Vin de France classification on the label. However, the wine still holds classic Loire Valley appeal, with pleasurable aromas and flavors of lime and grapefruit bolstered by a fine streak of mineral. Enjoy as a refreshing aperitif, or with mussels, clams or seafood prepared with a citrus based sauce.

Colline del Sole Falanghina Sannio, Campania, Italy (Aron)

Another great seafood wine, this bright refreshing white is made from 100% Falanghina grown in Falanghina del Sannio, an area in Campania, the “shin” of the boot located just North of Naples. Ancient philosopher Pliny the Elder enjoyed this region and the wines grown here, and in fact his phrase “in vino veritas” (in wine there is truth) is thought to be inspired by the region. This dry wine shows notes of orange peel and a hint of spice, and Campanians pair it with the abundant seafood or local specialty buffalo mozzarella pizza.

La Colline Aux Fossiles 2020 Chardonnay, Roussillon, France (Andrew)

“La Colline Aux Fossiles” refers to the “hill of fossils” where the vines are planted, where you can literally see fossilized shells mixed in with the gravelly soil washed down from the mountains. This 100% Chardonnay created by the winemaking team of Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage is fermented in used oak barrels, sporting notes of stone fruit, honeysuckle and a rich yet balanced medium-to-full bodied texture. This is an excellent wine to pair with crabcakes, grilled chicken skewers, or grilled salmon topped with a creamy dill sauce.

Prèfèrence 2021 Costières de Nimes Rosè, France (Jen & Jerry)

We ordered this wine upon tasting it months ago, and it’s finally arrived! Comprised of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah grown in clay-limestone soils, this dry Rosè from the beautiful Costieres de Nimes appellation of the Rhone shows exuberant aromas and flavors of strawberries and raspberries. Pair with salads, barbecued chicken or pork, or pizza!

Domaine Gres St. Vincent Signargues Cotes du Rhone Village, France  (Jen & Jerry)

This wine is made from a cooperative cellar near Avignon, which explains the affordability. Made from 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Carignan this red is made using local yeasts and after resting in tank is bottle unfined and unfiltered. Showing plush notes of plum and bramble edged with Mediterranean herb and olive, this medium bodied wine has nice acidity and subtle tannins. Enjoy with grilled chicken accented with grilled lemon, garlic and herbs.

Dona Maria 2017 Alentejo Red, Portugal (Tim)

Alentejo, a hot region of rolling plains situated in Southwest Portugal, is responsible for the production of wine, olive oil and more than half of the World’s supply of cork.  Made from Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown in largely volcanic soil, this bold Portuguese red shows ripe plum and red berry notes with a hint of spice. Pair with smoked ribs or grilled skirt steak.

La Teneca Cabernet Sauvignon,  Piedmont, Italy (Andres)

This is a softer and lighter Cabernet Sauvignon than your typical California version, but is an enjoyable red that won’t break the bank paired with a simple weeknight meal. Showing dark berry, tobacco and herb notes, this would work well with grilled sausages or burgers.

Le Coste 2019 Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy (Andrew)

The little brother of Tuscany’s highly esteemed Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino offers delicious Sangiovese goodness for a fraction of the price. Typically made from the younger vineyards and with less barrel aging (this version aged 6 months in French oak), this fresher red can be perfect paired with a summer time snack of grilled bread, fatty charcuterie and a selection of cheeses.

Walt 2019 Blue Jay Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, California (Pat)

Walt’s Anderson Valley vineyards enjoy large diurnal temperature shifts and gravelly loam soils on beautiful rolling hills, just miles from the Pacific Ocean.  Dark plum, wild blueberry and tart cherry notes intermingle with savory tones of forest floor, root and spice in this bold and flavorful Pinot Noir. This would be a wonderful wine to pair with as special meal of beef tenderloin or grilled salmon.

Ravel & Stitch 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast, California (Aron)

We’ve long been fans of the Wente family of wines, which Ravel & Stitch belongs to.  The wine is named for the concepts of ravel “bringing together of different cultures during the pioneering days” and stitch “the blending of sites, grapes and winemaking techniques”.  The grapes are sourced from the Central Coast appellation, a composition of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Barbera, 6% Petite Sirah, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec aged 12 months in French and American oak. Showing a plush palate of dark cherry and vanilla, this is a rich and layered red that will be delicious with grilled steaks or lamb chops.
