April Staff Picks

Weingut Wegeler 2016 Riesling “PUR”, Rheingau, Germany (Andres)

Founder Franz Wegeler was Ludwig von Beethoven’s first friend when they were boys growing up in Bonn, Germany in the 1770s. Now, Wegeler’s descendants have estates in both Mosel and Rheingau, where they produce a variety of beautiful estate-grown and yes, sometimes super-expensive wines!  This, their affordable “PUR!” dry Riesling, is at once mineral, peach. lemon, acid, creamy, crisp and contains eye-opening loads of characteristic funky PETROL notes. We’ll love this bottle well-chilled with spicy sushi or tuna tacos, or with grilled pork tenderloin adorned with a lively pineapple salsa.

Garalis “Terra Ambera” 2019, Lemnos Island, Greece (Jen & Jerry)

Lemnos is a wine-producing island in the northern Aegean Sea, one of the larger Greek Islands stretching 20 miles from east to west.  This is a skin contact or “orange” wine, made by allowing the white wine grape must (crushed grapes with skins, seeds and stems) to macerate in a manner similar to the way red wines are made. The result is a golden-hued, slightly astringent wine.  This is also bottled unfined and unfiltered, which explains the cloudy, murky appearance.  Many natural winemakers feel that filtering and fining strips the wine of important flavors and complexity.  Made from the grape Muscat of Alexandria with 5 days of skin contact, this shows pronounced amazing waxy and floral aromatics, followed by flavors of citrus and a light tannic astringency. Mottura 2019 Primitivo, Salento, Italy (Aron)

If you’ve never tried wine made from the Primitivo grape, it can be similar to California’s Zinfandel: the grapes are related. Pasquale Mottura founded the winery in 1927 in the Salento region of Puglia, located in the famed heel of the Italian “boot”.  Featuring ripe cherry fruit, mulberry, blueberry, vanilla and herbs, this is a bolder wine meant to be consumed with rich cheeses and charcuterie or grilled meats. Viña Robles 2019 “The Arborist” Red, Paso Robles, California (Andrew)

“The Arborist” pays homage to the historic, majestic Paso Robles oaks, and in fact, a portion of the proceeds from every bottle sold helps fund “One Tree Planted”, an organization dedicated to planting trees. This blend of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache and Tannat spends 18 months in large American, French and Hungarian oak barrels. Dark garnet in color, this shows notes of dark cherries and plum with hints of tobacco, spice and cocoa and a soft velvety finish. Pair with grilled beef or spicy chili.

Rasa Vineyards “Occam’s Razor” 2018 Red, Columbia Valley, Washington (Andrew)

This wine is named for a rule coined by William of Ockham, a 14th Century Franciscan philosopher who theorized that often the simplest answer is the correct answer. The term for this theory was “lex parsimoniae” or law of parsimony, better known today as Occam’s Razor.  The wine is made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot aged in mostly used French oak.  Full-bodied, this shows blackberry, framboise, cassis and earth. Enjoy with grilled meats.
